CPDUK define a CPD Hour as the time spent by a delegate in “active learning”. Active learning defines the actual time spent learning something relevant for your Continuing Professional Development objectives. I saw an online training event being advertised recently as offering 5.5 hours CPD. Nothing strange in that you might think. But when I looked at the programme, the actual ‘active learning’ sessions were only 4.5 hours in length. The remainder being refreshment and lunch breaks. Be careful out there guys. Don’t take the marketing on face value. Look at the learning you will be getting, how relevant it is to your personal development and how much of it you will be getting. Some of these events remain quite pricey, and you can easily pay up to £375 for one 4.5 hour training day - which can be advertised as 5.5 hours!

For week 9, the driving question is how can a personal learning network support the concept of life-long learning? PLNs provide a great source for continued learning. It is a way for people to learn together instead of alone. Because of this, you are constantly learning from each other, even if not in a school like setting. This means that life-long learning can happen when you have a PLN. You can always be learning new skills and knowledge throughout your life.
