We all know the built environment is a major contributor to the UK's carbon emissions - this makes the decarbonisation of the housing sector instrumental to the progress we make towards net zero. In a recent opinion piece by Priya Nair - THFC’s CEO - for Social Housing Magazine, she discusses how it's time to reframe the conversation and acknowledge that sustainability and housing go hand-in-hand. The regeneration of the Stockwell Park development in Brixton is one of many examples highlighting how sustainability can be central to housing developments. Managed by SNG (Sovereign Network Group), this project integrated various green initiatives, including rooftop solar panels that power 270 homes, electric vehicle chargers and extensive nature-based solutions to promote biodiversity. When it comes to sustainable funding, partnerships must be at the heart of this. We need HAs and private investors collaborating on green projects with the support of the government. Thanks for including us Adam Place MRTPI. An interesting article below for those interested in better understanding the relationship between sustainability and viability. These two topics certainly go hand in hand. Our point stands; early adopters of low carbon principles will benefit in the long run as policy and regulations continue to change in this direction.
"Developers who embrace net-zero practices now will be well-positioned to navigate future requirements, opposed to those who do not. Those lagging behind may face a scramble to adapt to net-zero standards when they become mandatory." - Ollie Eggenton, Director at TwoEighty Consulting As the onus on sustainability in development increases, so does the importance of Net Zero Homes. Read our latest Insight in which Viable Placemaking have partnered with TwoEighty Consulting to discuss the importance of net zero homes and how these relate to the future of planning and viability. https://lnkd.in/eTGW4uG9 #planning #development #housing #netzero #carbon #sustainability

I’m pleased to announce the publication of Windmill Development Group's first official Sustainability Report. It follows our Sustainability Strategy, published in May 2023, and details our current sustainability strategy, commitments, targets, action plan, and progress to date. Over the past year, we’ve focused on three key areas as part of our sustainability strategy: governance, innovation and partnerships. I’m proud of the significant advancements we’ve made in these areas and would like to highlight three impactful accomplishments from the past year: 1. In 2023, we were officially endorsed as a One Planet Living Global Leader, making us the first company in North America to receive this prestigious endorsement by Bioregional, the UK-based body which oversees One Planet Living. 2. Through our Working Group program, we continued to refine and improve the Windmill Impact Standard, establishing ambitious short- and long-term carbon targets for both operational and embodied carbon, and imposing rigorous carbon targets on our projects, including the elimination of combustion for cooking, space heating, or hot water. 3. Through our partnership with Civic Developments and CreateTO, the City of Toronto’s real estate agency, we are collaborating to address Canada’s housing crisis through our project at 2444 Eglinton Ave E. This project will be the largest co-operative housing development undertaken in Ontario in the past 25 years, delivering much needed affordable housing that will also be built to the highest sustainability standards. Many thanks to our team for putting together this impressive report, specifically to all the hard work that Urban Equation has done to help us drive innovation on both corporate and project levels. Did you know the most prevalent green building certifications across most markets today focus on design and construction rather than improved energy use and emissions performance? As markets begin to shift this focus to value building performance, see what’s in store for today’s most popular certification frameworks here: https://bit.ly/3ywgJFq

🌿 Sustainability in Business: A Closer Look An interesting case study from Shellwin Real Estate on its sustainability journey. As businesses increasingly embrace sustainability, it’s essential to examine both the successes and challenges they face. One notable area of focus is the claim of “zero to landfill” made by suppliers. While such claims sound promising, they don’t always withstand scrutiny. As companies strive to reduce their environmental impact, transparency and accountability remain critical. 🌎💡 #greenwashing #sustainabililty #iso14001 #pas2060
Today we are celebrating local Net Zero pioneer Shellwin Real Estate and their inspiring sustainability journey! The Managing Director, Helen Shellabear has transformed her family-owned real estate business into an exemplar of sustainable practice. Some key highlights: - Shellwin was an early adopter of BBF's Net Zero programme, calculating their carbon footprint and using grants to finance property improvements. - Helen is a vocal supporter of sustainability, speaking at events to encourage other local SMEs to take action. - Shellwin is committed to supporting the next generation, getting involved with the Buckinghamshire Skills Hub Green Schools Challenge. Their next project involves the installation of solar panels on the roof of one of their buildings, which Helen believes will reduce their kilowatt-hour (kWh) drawdown from the national grid by 60%, once operational. That equates to a 34% reduction in their overall carbon emissions for that building. Once that’s up and running, Helen plans to address the “pain point” of their waste suppliers, who she finds can make claims about ‘zero to landfill’ which don’t always stand up to scrutiny. Learn more about Shellwin's journey https://orlo.uk/nnFcj Net Zero Bucks is funded by the UK government through the Shared Prosperity Fund, which is managed by Buckinghamshire Council. #NetZero #SustainableBusinesses #ClimateAction #LocalLeadership #GreenTransformation
