Protections for whistleblowers under the Employment Rights Act 1996 (ERA) are stated to apply only to workers and employees. Volunteers and trustees in the UK have not therefore been protected in law from retaliation because they have blown the whistle. Domestic abuse is costing UK business £14 billion from employee absenteeism and reduced productivity. The distinction between charity and redistribution is crucial in understanding their ethical and societal implications. True charity involves voluntary acts of empathy and compassion, while government actions, such as redistribution, involve coercive extraction of resources through taxation. This involuntary extraction lacks the moral foundation of true charity and can lead to unintended consequences, such as funding terrorists in the Middle East. It also raises concerns about personal freedom and economic efficiency, as taxation disincentivizes economic contribution and innovation. While governments can facilitate charitable acts, the act of redistribution should not be confused with genuine charity, which remains an inherently personal and voluntary act. The moral dimensions of redistribution are complicated by operational inefficiencies and corruption within bureaucratic systems. Ethical governance in resource distribution requires a reevaluation of methods and principles. Governments must be scrutinised for their role as redistributors of wealth, focusing on facilitating conditions for individuals to flourish through their own efforts. A practical approach to reforming government involvement in charity involves enhancing transparency, accountability, and public debate. I understand the focus but recent days have highlighted we need to radically re think how we address levels of violence across the UK As someone who spent his last ten years with the Scottish VRU I was part of a team who was forced to think differently. The constant focus on knives isn’t helpful. We don’t have a knife crime problem. We have a violence problem. Knives don’t kill people. It’s the mindset of the perpetrators that leads to the knife being used. The knife crime label isn’t helpful. It’s a media term and we are being prevented from addressing issues if we keep calling it such Knife violence starts long before you think it does. Also campaigns like this might look the right thing to do however the evidence says they rarely work. Why? Too much focus on the negative. Telling people that bad things will happen if you do bad things doesn’t work as a prevention tool. It’s much better to focus on the positive. “Most young people don’t carry knives” or “most people know the consequences of carrying knives” Campaigns need to better follow the power of PIE Positive Inclusive Empowering. This is a proven tool that works A great example is a campaign from the US. Friends don’t let friends drive drunk led to around 70% of US citizens taking car keys off their friends It’s time to build relationships. Relationships are the currency of change Please think prevention better.

The Stand With Us Fund is Open The second round of the Stand With Us Fund is now open and offers one-year grants of up to £25k to organisations delivering frontline services addressing male violence against women and girls in the UK. Originally started with money raised by Reclaim These Streets in the wake of the appalling kidnap, rape and murder of Sarah Everard by a serving Metropolitan Police Officer, the Fund was designed in close consultation with violence against women and girls sector experts and aims to strengthen organisations run by and for women who stand up and take action every single day to build safer futures for women and girls. Women-led charities are vital in supporting women and girls who are affected by male violence but many of these organisations face severe underfunding and are struggling to meet escalating costs amid rising demand. The Stand With Us Fund exists to address these challenges and aims to enable organisations to be in a stronger position to survive, thrive and grow by investing in organisational development work.
