Last week, our Clinical Partnerships Team member, Ally Rupar, attended the Maternal Mental Health FORUM, hosted by the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, where she gathered some incredible learnings to share with our team. The conference brought together nearly 700 payors, policy makers, providers, and partners to tackle the important topic of maternal mental health. Some of the major points of discussion throughout the week included the need for meaningful behavioral health integration within maternal care, how value-based payment strategies can be applied to care models, and approaches to standardized depression screening and measurement that can be leveraged to help address the full continuum of maternal mental health needs. We continue to be involved in discussions surrounding maternal mental health and our team is committed to keeping our finger on the pulse of this movement. We’re motivated to keep working with physical and behavioral health providers and health systems to foster an integrated health system that proactively screens pregnant people and is equipped to monitor and support their mental health needs. Thank you Ally for attending the conference and sharing your learnings! #MaternalMentalHealth #BehavioralHealth #MeasurementBasedCare #Outcomes

In a world which puts “beauty,” “health,” consumerism, and thinness above all else, being different makes accessing eating disorder healing a STRUGGLE. Then, if you need affirming and culturally-competent treatment? That’s even harder to find! 73% of people seeking eating disorder treatment report experiencing bias “against people like me”, including in the medical and eating disorder communities. We knew bias was pervasive, but these statistics are astounding. We also know that weight stigma is common in society as a whole, but did you know that 7 in 10 people seeking eating disorder treatment reported weight stigma as a barrier to accessing QUALITY care? Another number we shouldn’t forget about any time soon. For HEAL Week, let’s send a reminder to the world: Eating disorders affect people of all genders, ages, races, ethnicities, body shapes and weights, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic statuses. Support clinical services, educational outreach, and advocacy efforts to interrupt sociocultural bias by learning more about Project HEAL and supporting our work! Find out more at the link in bio or tinyurl.com/healweek24 Thank you to our partners Feelings Found, SHE RECOVERS® Foundation, The Renfrew Center, and 🌊Sea Waves Inc🌊 for working to break down stigma and stereotypes around mental health, body image, disordered eating, and more! November marks #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, a time to honor the rich cultures, traditions, and histories of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. It's also a critical opportunity to shed light on the health disparities faced by these populations and advocate for equity in care. Social determinants of health— access to quality healthcare, education, housing, and economic stability —play a pivotal role in shaping health outcomes. Mental health disparities are particularly concerning, with AI/AN populations facing higher rates of depression, PTSD, and substance use disorders. As providers, advocates, and allies, addressing the mental health needs of Native communities requires a culturally informed approach. This includes incorporating traditional practices, respecting community values, and expanding access to mental health services through targeted outreach and funding. Let’s use this month to raise awareness and take actionable steps toward eliminating these disparities, ensuring that Native voices are heard and their needs met. #HealthyLivingForEveryone #MentalHealth #MentalHealthCare #MentalHealthMatters #EndTheStigma

As we observe World Mental Health Day under the theme "It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace," it’s crucial to focus on the well-being of our healthcare workers especially those managing HIV and TB. The emotional and mental strain of caring for vulnerable communities can be overwhelming and a toll on mental health. Now is the time to make mental health a top priority in our workplaces. To all healthcare professionals in HIV and TB care, remember: 💚 It’s okay to ask for help 💚 Prioritize your own well-being, just as you do for your patients 💚 Lean on your colleagues for support When you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to care for those who rely on you. Together, let’s build a workplace where mental health is supported, stigma is broken, and everyone’s well-being matters. #MatCHInstitute #MentalHealthDay

Remember the good old days (before the pandemic) when we said 1 in 5 adolescents was struggling with a major mental health challenge, like severe depression, crippling anxiety, bipolar, or another chronic condition like those? Now we're saying 1 in 5 has wanted to end their life. This is not a good direction we are headed in. Thankfully there are organizations like Newport Healthcare that are able to achieve outcomes like this 72% number below. Read the report here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eT3_UjF5 Nobody else, from what I've seen, has the 2 things that they have to combat the trends we are seeing with our kids: ➡️ The systemic hub of care created around the needs of each client that brings in the whole family to the training picture ➡️ The analysis and response to outcomes that inform better treatment, through the Center for Research and Innovation, their proprietary clinical research system In so many individual cases, the signs are already there: - Research shows that young people who use cannabis regularly is often actually a sign that they are self-medicating to cope with a serious mental health challenge. - 50% of adolescents had reported at least 2 symptoms of disordered eating. ❓ Can we be more observant and compassionate? Possibly getting ahead of the suffering in some cases before it gets worse? 🔅 We can learn what to look for and how to respond. At intake, 40% of adolescent residential patients felt they couldn’t express their feelings to family members. By just WEEK 5 of treatment, all family attachment measures had improved. The number of adolescent patients making suicide plans dropped by 72% over 5 weeks of residential treatment. #Engage with what we see #mentalHealthAwareness #suicidePrevention -

KFF Health News reports that “Roughly 1 in 5 adolescents report experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression.” Sadly, this isn’t surprising since half of all mental illnesses begin by the age of 14 and three-quarters by the time the brain stops developing at age 25. This brings to mind the Pediatric and Adolescent Collaborative Care Roundtable white paper published by our partner Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute. The paper states that the Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) is “the integrated behavioral health model with the strongest evidence base to effectively address the needs of our mental health care system – including for youth and children.” The CoCM allows pediatricians to detect and treat behavioral health needs with support from mental health specialists in real time. Early detection reverses the 8-to-10-YEAR lag time between onset and diagnosis that’s now standard. Maternal mental health is a growing public health issue, with rising rates of postpartum depression and anxiety. As Malekeh Amini, CEO of Trayt Health, points out, postpartum depression was already 7x higher in 2015 compared to 2000, and societal shifts like the Dobbs decision have added even more stress. With tech-enabled solutions like Trayt Health, innovative payers like CareSource, and specialized providers like manatee leading the way, access to mental health services is expanding. By combining early intervention and universal screening, mothers can receive the support they need to thrive.
