Are you struggling to retain donors at your nonprofit arts org? First and foremost, you need to know where you stand. Once you’ve identified your retention rate, establish an ideal donor profile or persona. Don’t just look at donation data; look at overall engagement with emails, social media, and other communications. Have all your donor data in one place. Make sure your CRM can connect with your social media listening tools. Create a donor heat map to track engagement, where the more engaged donors are “red hot” and the less engaged are blue. Put out a donor survey on a regular basis, which can help you segment your donors and implement different strategies. Segment donors and tailor your retention approach. Have at least 3-4 donor segments. The default method is to categorize by dollar amount, but you can also segment donors by the year in which they began donating or engaging with your organization. One fundraising strategy that is often overlooked is deceptively simple: providing donors with multiple opportunities to contribute and engage with your charity. Many nonprofits fall short when it comes to the frequency of their communication, whether it be an email, text, phone call, direct mail, social media, or paid media it is often falls short of what it takes to drive awareness, foster interest in your charity, and drive an action such as donating. Unfortunately, the majority of nonprofits typically limit the number of interactions they have with their supporters. This limitation reduces donations. It’s a well-established fact that repetition in messaging is a key driver of engagement. Repetition is not only effective, but it is additive -- its impact builds over time and is reliant on the frequency of communication. Nonprofit fundraisers often hesitate to reach out to donors frequently because of concerns about being perceived as too pushy. But the reality is that the more you communicate—whether it’s asking, informing, educating, inspiring—the more successful you’ll be. #philanthropy #directmail #fundraising #digitalfundraising #charity AmPhil
