“Eighty percent of Georgians want to join the European Union, so how can the government be so confident it will hold onto power by spurning Brussels and seemingly deliberately torpedoing the nation’s EU prospects?”. This article presents a good analysis and answers to this question. And this answer is simple (albeit, somewhat lost in a smoke & mirrors technique mastered and deployed by Putin’s puppets): “Bidzina Ivanishvili, an oligarch who made his vast fortune in Russia and the founder of the Georgian Dream, is a crucial player. His personal wealth and his party’s control of public finances have given him and his favored politicians enormous political influence, with the power to award state contracts and create employment, gaining them favor in a country where one in six people are jobless”. Ivanishvili’s task (given by Putin just like the one that was given to Yanukovych back in 2013) is to bring Georgia to the slavery rule by Putin’s ZZ empire. Ivanishvili is not even hiding what he is going to do with the opposition and civil rights before the end of this year. Beyond any doubt, this is a historic moment for the Georgian people. Either they will defend their choice to be part of the European civilization or will find themselves fighting on the Western front in the ZZ empire trenches a couple of years from now. #stoprussia https://lnkd.in/giGwm3u6

Yesterday, the Georgian Dream Party's decision to halt EU negotiations until 2028 and delay Georgia's EU membership until 2030 sparked widespread protests across the country. Many Georgians, who had hoped for quicker EU integration, felt betrayed. The government's violent crackdown on these protests, including the use of excessive force, raised serious concerns about the state of democracy and human rights in Georgia. In this tense atmosphere, President Salome Zurabishvili, seen as the country's most legitimate political figure, attended the protests to show her support for the people's demands and the European path. Her presence underscored the growing divide between the government and citizens who want to see Georgia move forward with its EU aspirations. The crisis reflects a broader struggle over Georgia's political future and its alignment with Europe, with Zurabishvili's leadership now crucial in navigating this challenging period. 🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪

In my latest article for the Atlantic Council, I argue that Georgian Dream's foreign agents law is intended to suppress civil society in the lead-up to parliamentary elections in October, and Georgian authorities are now adopting tactics that closely mirror Russia’s own efforts to stamp out domestic dissent and silence opponents. If the law comes into force, many fear it will set the stage for a more authoritarian form of government. If Georgian Dream is able to secure a convincing result in the October ballot, Ivanishvili has already outlined plans for a strict “political and legal condemnation” of his party’s domestic opponents. In light of the mounting violence against opposition figures and pro-democracy protesters in Tbilisi in recent days, such statements must be taken seriously. Hundreds of thousands of Georgians have joined protests this spring in an emphatic display of support for the country’s European future, but the struggle looks likely to continue throughout the coming months. The Georgian government has already demonstrated its readiness to employ Kremlin tactics. The question now is how far they are willing to go. #Georgia #Tbilisi #foreignagentslaw #notorussianlaw

Dear Friends and Colleagues, The people of Georgia are fighting for our country’s freedom and its place within the European family. Unfortunately, the ruling Georgian Dream party, with its pro-Russian government, recently stole the elections and now openly blocks Georgia’s integration with the European Union by unilaterally suspending EU accession negotiations. Euro-Atlantic integration is not only the majority wish of our people but a constitutional obligation for those in power. Any attempt to obstruct this process contradicts the law and the will of our people. In response, we have launched peaceful protests across Georgia. We firmly believe that Georgian Dream’s actions are backed by Russia, as Russian officials openly support them. The decision to reject closer ties with Europe makes Georgia more vulnerable to Russia’s influence. Over 200,000 people have protested nonstop for four days. In turn, Georgian Dream has used excessive force against peaceful protesters, deploying special forces who brutally beat and gas us. Many have been arrested, and many families have lost contact with loved ones. But we will continue to fight for our freedom and for integration into the European Union. Yesterday, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced that the U.S. has suspended its Strategic Partnership with Georgia following Georgian Dream’s suspension of EU accession negotiations. The U.S. State Department stated that Georgian Dream’s anti-democratic actions violated the core values of our partnership. For many of us who have dedicated our lives to advancing Euro-Atlantic integration, this is deeply painful. We are grateful for the support Georgia has received from the U.S. and EU since independence, and we cannot imagine losing these vital ties. We call for sanctions against those responsible for this injustice, particularly targeting the family members of Georgia’s pro-Russian government who freely study and travel to the U.S. and EU while opposing these institutions. We will continue to fight for our place in the civilized world, but support – through personal sanctions – is crucial. Please support my country and our fight by helping to spread the message and raise awareness.

The #UnitedStates condemns the #Kremlin-inspired “foreign influence” legislation advanced in #Georgia’s parliament earlier today and the false narrative government officials have adopted to defend it. Members of the ruling party have been clear that the intent of the law is to silence critical voices and destroy Georgia’s vibrant civil society, which serves as a critical check on government in any democratic nation. This legislation and Georgian Dream’s anti-Western rhetoric put Georgia on a precarious trajectory. The statements and actions of the Georgian government are incompatible with the democratic values that underpin membership in the #EU and #NATO and thus jeopardize Georgia’s path to Euro-Atlantic integration. Comments mischaracterizing foreign assistance in Georgia – which we have provided for 32 years to strengthen Georgia’s economy, democracy, and ability to deter Russian aggression – fundamentally undermine the strong relationship we have developed with the government and people of Georgia. We stand with the Georgian people and their right to have their voices heard. We condemn the use of violence against peaceful protests, including against journalists covering the demonstrations. Use of force to suppress peaceful assembly and freedom of speech is unacceptable, and we urge authorities to allow non-violent protesters to continue to exercise their right to freedom of expression.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an "emergency martial law" on Tuesday, accusing the opposition of controlling parliament, sympathizing with North Korea, and undermining the government with anti-state activities. In a televised briefing, Yoon vowed to "eradicate pro-North Korean forces" and defend the constitutional democratic order. However, it remains unclear how these measures will impact the country’s governance and democracy. Since taking office in 2022, Yoon has faced challenges in advancing his agenda, with his conservative party in conflict with the opposition-controlled parliament. Tensions have escalated over the next year’s budget bill and ongoing investigations involving Yoon’s wife and officials. The opposition Democratic Party convened an emergency meeting in response to the announcement. #SouthKorea #YoonSukYeol #MartialLaw #Politics #Democracy #Opposition
