Corinne Mills visited the Crick last week and shared these top tips for building a fulfilling career in science and beyond... ⬇️ 🔹 You’re much more than your job title. Some fields (including science!) use the same job title for completely different jobs. Introduce yourself by saying what you do and why. 🔹 It’s the way that you do it. Expertise and knowledge are important, but behaviour and how you influence the behaviour of others is what builds your reputation and gets you employed. 🔹 Talk positively about yourself. Learn what you’re the go-to person for and know how to describe it to other people. 🔹 Get ready for change. Technological change means that careers now don’t follow the traditional ladder. Be open to a zigzagging career and movement between fields and specialisms. 🔹 People are your greatest resource. Take time to deliberately build and use your network to find opportunities and share experiences. Corinne visited the Crick as part of our Academy’s annual Careers Fest - a week dedicated to career development for people across the institute. We’ve been taking part in careers fairs, panel discussions and workshops on everything from networking skills to taking up new roles abroad.

I realized that these networking opportunities directly aligned with my career goals. I learned how my major translates to real-world roles and how curiosity can help you build meaningful conversations. It’s amazing how much confidence I gained—not just in my speaking skills but also in understanding the value I can bring to a company." Key takeaways from Kavya’s experience: -Networking opens doors to unexpected opportunities. -Confidence grows when you step outside your comfort zone. -Research is crucial—whether it’s refining your resume or understanding a company’s values. -Facing obstacles? Don’t give up. Every experience is a learning opportunity! 𝐊𝐚𝐯𝐲𝐚'𝐬 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞? "Take initiative, put yourself out there, and leverage every opportunity to learn. It only takes 30 minutes of research to create a meaningful connection with one recruiter." The College of Business Career Fair is an invaluable resource for NIU students to gain hands-on experience in networking and jumpstart their careers! #niucob #cobstudents #mgmtmatters

I was talking to a person just launching into her professional career and discussing potential avenues for roles and various options around this. One resource that did not seem to be at the top of the list was reaching out to people that already held the positions or worked in the areas she was considering. This is along the lines of my May 17th post however I there is an opportunity not often leveraged in which someone looking to head into a professional area does not always leverage the experience of others in place already. This seems especially true for those early in their professional life. I realize there are career fairs and events intended to attract people into organizations or career paths and have participated in these. I see a much deeper conversation happening with the personal connection, however. I am not discounting career guidance or counseling either, but after a person has an idea regarding direction, who do they talk to for real world perspective? Also, when I talk to people in various industries, they have a feel for where things are headed and what that area might look like in the future which seems like very relevant information to someone considering heading into that area. If you see organizations or individuals making these personal connections and providing perspective to people considering professional areas, especially those just starting their professional careers, please let me know.

It's National Careers Week, and we're marking the initiative throughout the coming days, by sharing some insights, advice and reflections from various members of IRLA. As a membership body for our sector, it's really important that we're able to share our experiences of getting into the industry, and provide a channel through which those interested in the arena could come to know more, once they've decided to follow a reinsurance path. Here's some top tips from Richard Burrows on getting into the sector: - Make yourself stand out from others by taking advantage of any opportunity which comes your way. That could be attending a training session, volunteering to go to a networking event, or meeting with others already in the sector. You never know what piece of helpful information you might pick up, and whatever you do pick up, is more than those who didn’t bother attending! - Be open-minded and remember that the career route or pathway which you have in mind, might not necessarily be the one which you end up following – and this does not mean that you have “gone wrong” – opportunities can come up which you had not expected, and most of the time these can end up helping you rather than hindering you. To a young person wanting to find out more about a career in our sector, he adds these further pearls of wisdom: - You won’t understand the whole market before you join it, but it is important to show an interest. Keep an eye on what is happening in the news, and perhaps identify a handful of search terms to search for online each week, to build your knowledge and awareness. Employers will not expect you to know everything. - Speak to people who are already in the industry. Go to careers fairs and open evenings arranged by firms and actually find out what it is like to work in that sector from the people who already do. What are your top tips for getting into the industry? Comment below. #IRLAMemberNews #IRLACareers #NationalCareersWeek National Careers Week

What defines the success of a strategy? Earlier this year, before going on maternity leave, I worked with several departments to set medium and long-term objectives across the business. Now, six months later, I’m taking a moment to reflect on how things are progressing. From the time he started, it was clear that James Cannon could see the bigger picture. He quickly integrated with our technical teams, deeply understanding some of our most complex roles. His accuracy in identifying and putting forward the right candidates has been nothing short of exceptional, especially in his first year. But James didn’t stop there. I asked him to focus on the long-term, specifically by establishing graduate training programmes and apprentice schemes. Over the past couple of weeks, he’s independently attended two university job fairs (a feat in itself!), and what I truly love is his feedback: 💬 "Students came up to say they specifically came to see us." This speaks volumes about our impact and our business’s growing reputation. It’s a true indication that our strategy is working. Success is when people seek out your company because of the culture, opportunities, and vision you’ve built. Well done, James—you’ve done a fantastic job executing the strategy, and we can’t wait to see how you’ll continue to help Enspec grow and what else you’ll accomplish! #BusinessGrowth

Over 95% of TRIO students don’t receive the financial support they need. This often forces advisors to cancel career fairs or cut emergency funds. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Many of your alumni, now thriving in their careers, are eager to give back—they just need a nudge. Here’s how to engage them: 1. Alumni-led workshops: Host workshops where alumni guide students through the scholarship application process, offering tips and insights to strengthen applications. 2. Alumni-sourced scholarships: Encourage alumni to crowdsource scholarships for emergencies like living expenses. Create fun challenges like “Raise $5,000 in 30 days” to keep them engaged. 3. Alumni-sponsored career days: Alumni can sponsor workplace tours, industry conferences, and job shadowing opportunities, bridging the gap between students’ dreams and reality. By engaging alumni, you can break financial barriers and help your students succeed. Reach out and start making a difference today.

It’s easy to feel lost as a student when you're deciding what to do with your career. There’s a huge lack of information on what a job or industry is ACTUALLY like or how you can get into it. It’s why the work Peter Wood is doing with The Graduate Guide is so needed. He shares the real stories of how people started their careers so students are more informed when making such important life decisions. I really enjoyed taking a walk down memory lane and sharing my story with Peter. We discussed: - Starting a business by getting on a one-way ticket to India - How a single conversation at a job fair can change your entire career trajectory - Making critical decisions with limited data - What I'd do differently if I were 18 again The whole series is a great way for those starting out in their careers or looking to move into startups to get first-hand insights and the practical steps you can take. It will give you comfort to hear that very few careers (especially those of people who start businesses) are predictable or linear and there's never a 'right time' to take the plunge. Highly recommend taking a listen to all the episodes or sharing with those you know who are at that daunting part in their life. 🎧 Link in the comments 🎧

⏳ Navigating the Crossroads: A Senior’s Journey I went to the FSU Business Career Fair today and met some incredible representatives from impressive companies. As I navigated through the busy aisles and engaged in conversations, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the number of people, like me, who are seeking a role to start next summer. It’s both exciting and daunting to be at this pivotal point, where every interaction could shape our future paths. As a senior in college, you find yourself at a fascinating yet challenging intersection of present and future. Balancing the completion of final credit hours, active campus involvement, and the extensive search for a post-grad job can be intense. There is an unwavering pressure to excel academically, lead with impact, and secure a position that aligns with emerging career goals. Each moment is an opportunity to refine skills, build networks, and lay the foundation for what’s next—despite the uncertainty of what that "next" might be. To the recruiters, entry-level employees, seasoned professionals, and esteemed professors: What advice would you offer to navigate this transitional phase with grace and effectiveness? What should a senior seek in a company to ensure it’s a good fit for someone who is still developing their personal and professional identity? How did you, when you were in my shoes, approach this transition period, and what strategies proved invaluable? To all my fellow seniors and college students who are on the hunt for a job, remember: everything happens for a reason, and you will end up where you’re meant to be. Looking forward to your thoughts and suggestions! Please feel free to message me if you'd like to chat : ) #careeradvice #collegesenior #jobsearch #transition

I recently had the privilege of speaking at a careers fair at my old school, reflecting on my journey from corporate learning to running my own business. Sharing my career milestones and lessons learned with sixth-form students reminded me that the insights I’ve gained over the years aren’t just for those starting out but also for seasoned professionals. Here are a few key takeaways I shared with the students—and ones that apply to all of us: 💡 Embrace new opportunities, even the unexpected. 💡 Build strong relationships and seek mentors. 💡 Learn from setbacks and grow from them. 💡 Develop both hard and soft skills. 💡 Stay curious and committed to lifelong learning. 💡 Take charge of your career by aligning your strengths with the needs of your industry. 💡 Align passion with purpose for long-term fulfilment. These principles have shaped my path from corporate to entrepreneurship, and they continue to guide me in supporting organisations and individuals through training, mentoring, and career development. Have you reflected on the lessons you’ve learned along your career journey?
