***FREE PhD WEBINAR*** CASE STUDY AS METHOD Dr Vighneswaran N Vithiatharan & Dr Craig J Selby Wednesday 17 July 2024 | 8pm (GMT +8) A case study is a research approach that is used to generate an in-depth, multi-faceted understanding of a complex issue in its real context. Although case study methods remain a controversial approach to data collection, it is an established research design that is widely recognised in many social science studies especially when in-depth explanations of a social behaviour are sought after. One of the reasons for the recognition of case study as a research method is that researchers were becoming more concerned about the limitations of quantitative methods in providing holistic and in-depth explanations of the social and behavioural problems in question. Through case study methods, a researcher is able to go beyond the quantitative statistical results and understand the behavioural conditions through the actor’s perspective. Join us Wednesday 17 July 2024 at 8:00pm (GMT +8), where we will explore how we can engage with the Case Study as a tool to inform our research. Zoom link in the comments section! Finding a Research Gap: A Guide for PhD Students Identifying a research gap is crucial for making a significant contribution to your field. Here’s how you can find that perfect gap: 1. Literature Review: Conduct a thorough review of recent literature in your area of interest. Pay attention to the discussions, conclusions, and suggested future research sections of these papers. These often highlight unresolved questions and potential research gaps. 2. Identify Limitations: Look for the limitations section in existing studies. Researchers often point out what they couldn’t explore or where their study falls short, which can be an excellent starting point for your research. 3. Current Trends: Stay updated with the latest trends and developments in your field by attending conferences, webinars, and following key journals. Emerging trends can reveal new areas that are underexplored. 4. Discuss with Advisors and Peers: Regularly discuss your ideas and findings with your advisor and peers. They can offer valuable insights and point out gaps you might have missed. 5. Think Interdisciplinary: Consider how concepts from other disciplines could be applied to your field. Interdisciplinary research often uncovers unique gaps and innovative research opportunities. 6. Practical Problems: Look at real-world problems that lack adequate solutions. Practical issues can often translate into rich research gaps that are highly relevant and impactful. Remember, finding a research gap is about identifying where you can add the most value and make a meaningful contribution to your field. Stay curious, be thorough, and keep questioning! #PhDLife #ResearchGap #AcademicResearch #PhDAdvice

LL.M.’25 | B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) | Looking for opportunities in Corporate, Commercial, HRM, Banking, Insurance, ADR, Contract, Drafting, Compliance, Legal/ Management/ Administration Services worldwide.
Focus on PhD Quality, Not Just Publications This sounds good, but the reality is different. Most of them are more focused on publications than on quality. As long as publications remain a key parameter for assessment, quantity will win, and quality will continue to take a back seat. The essence of pursuing a PhD should be about curiosity, critical thinking, and making unique contributions to knowledge, not simply fulfilling publication requirements. As Prof. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar highlights, the current system's emphasis on mandatory publications can sometimes drive students to publish in lower-quality journals, undermining the value of their research. The key is fostering a culture where the PhD journey is supported through mentoring, structured courses, and continuous feedback from research committees. By focusing on strengthening the monitoring process of PhD work and supporting students to grow as inquisitive scholars, high-quality research and publications will naturally follow. In STEM and social sciences alike, the pressure to publish prematurely can compromise the integrity of research. It’s important that we allow the right time and space for impactful work to develop, rather than prioritizing quantity over quality. Let’s shift our focus towards nurturing thinkers and innovators, not just fulfilling publication quotas. #PhD #ResearchQuality #HigherEducation #Innovation #AcademicExcellence #Publications
