I recently heard someone say that their current company was a bit like a haunted house. This person said that one never knew when something terrifying was just around the corner. Given that it is the Halloween season, most of us enjoy the adrenaline rush of a good scare. That said, imagine that is your everyday experience. And unlike a haunted house, these fears are real. Loss of key team members because they can't stand the chaos. Loss of revenue because your company is also scaring its customers. Loss of employment because the chaos continues. Carlie Casterline is the Acting Manager at our Newton Home. She joined the team in June of 2020🌟 What is the best advice you’d give someone just starting as a DSP at SCARC? Keep an open mind! Just because one house or day program doesn’t work out doesn’t mean that none will! Try to help out at various programs and always remember the reason why you got into this field. How have you grown professionally while on SCARC’s Team? SCARC has opened so many opportunities in my short time here. I was fortunate enough to move up to an assistant manager within the first eight months of working for SCARC and it feels as if the rest just paved the way itself. I have learned how to work with coworkers of all ages, be a supervisor for someone who is significantly older than me, communicate in a professional manner, and most importantly I learned that it is okay to ask for help! What’s the best part of your job? The best part of my job is the individuals I serve and the staff that have become a huge part of my life. Being able to advocate for those I serve and seeing them grow is so extremely rewarding. Which of SCARC’s values resonate with you the most and why? Integrating our individuals into the community for sure! I love going out with our residents as a group and taking them on one on one outings. I love seeing the smiles on their faces when we go out and showing the community how great our individuals are. What is one thing you wish people knew about SCARC? I wish that people knew how much fun everyone at SCARC is. I wish people knew that this job is not just sitting in a house or program, but rather engaging with our individuals and spending time with them in the community. What is your favorite quote? “Work hard in silence, let success be your noise.” -Frank Ocean What do you do for fun outside of work? I am a volunteer EMT for Newton EMS as well as a nursing student. Most of my time is spent in the back of an ambulance or in a hospital, but when I do get a free moment outside of that I love riding my quad and being with my dog.

🚨Unpolished post alert!🚨 I did it!! After 10 weeks of training, I ran a 5K distance for the first time in more than 10 years. When I got caught up in PetSmart HQ layoffs, I needed something, anything I could march toward that wasn’t about work. Running was the answer. Despite being an avid power lifter and walking daily, I could barely run for 60 seconds when I first started. I had A LOT ahead of me. But each time I tackled a new distance, I had energy and enthusiasm and confidence that boosted other parts of my life, too. Week after week, I promised myself I’d show up for my runs. I didn’t have to run an eight-minute mile or wake up at 4 a.m. or be excited about the workout. I just had to show up. And that’s all it took. I can’t wait to see how far (pun intended) I take my new hobby, and I’ll be remembering the special value of showing up as my anthem for 2024 and beyond. __________ I’m accepting new fractional work and consulting clients! Love this Brian Chesky video on hiring and how they rebuilt Airbnb during the pandemic. Whether or not you’re a founder (I’m not), there’s a ton of great lessons here. Three standout lines on hiring: 1. The 2nd or 3rd follow-up question is how you can really tell how involved someone was on a project or how much they know about X. Always ask the follow ups. 2. Spend close to as much time on references as interviewing. Ask them who the best person they ever worked with was and why. 3. Anti-sell. What book are you currently reading, or what's your favourite book? "I read a lot! Favourite book at the moment is Beneath a Scarlet Sky, by Mark Sullivan – based on a true story from WWII." What aspects of your job do you find most rewarding? "I love creating a culture in our office that delights! From our epic Team Days to decorating the office for special events, notes on desks, coffee shouts, brave conversations, celebratory morning teas and cheering each other on – it all adds up to a great place to work and a good day in the office. I think we look after our team really well - we celebrate the wins and we journey through the lows together. It means our team can bring their whole self to work each day – that’s pretty rewarding." If your job had a mascot, what would it be, and why? "This is a hard one! I’m going to say a bee, not just because I’d love to have beehives one day, but because they’re incredible little creatures! They’re key for growth, work in community and build amazing structures – a pretty good mascot for someone who works in the people and culture space."
