If you're interested in learning more about barriers created by infrastructure for people trying to access destinations and mobility services, check out this webinar on Wednesday!
Manish Shirgaokar and I will be presenting our work in collaboration with Wesley Marshall and funded by NDSU-MPC on “Learning from the Travel Experiences of Persons with Disabilities: Investigating Navigation Challenges Posed by Infrastructure” on Wednesday June 12, 2024 at 1 pm – 2 pm MST. Join us on Zoom as we delve in to our findings: https://lnkd.in/g7asftDa This research seeks to address this disconnect via semi-structured interviews with 37 stakeholders. Among those, 28 are people with disabilities or are caretakers/advocates and nine are government officials whose work intersects with the supply of infrastructure regulated under the ADA. One objective is to understand how attributes of transportation infrastructure impact the daily mobility of people with disabilities. A second is to understand how the implementation and management of transportation assets impact the accessibility of travel for people with disabilities
Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: MPC 24-515: Learning from the Travel Experiences of Persons with Disabilities. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.

Nearly everything we use today is an accommodation. Just to name a few... - Cars. - Houses. - Restaurants. - Mobile phones. - Elevators. - Escalators. - Public transportation. - Computers. - A map/GPS. - A bed. - Chairs. - A stapler. - Sticky notes. - Air conditioning. - A ruler. - Uber/Lyft. How much more challenging would your day-to-day tasks be without the use of any (or all) of these items? Are you gaming the system by using any of these? Are you given an unfair advantage by using any of these? Of course not. So, why oh why, only when disabled people use accommodations, does it become a problem? Think about your own life without a car, air conditioning, or mobile phone the next time you consider denying a disabled person the basic human right of an accommodation. Can you imagine every time you need to take the elevator, use your own car, or staple papers together, having to ask some higher authority... a stranger you have never met before... for permission? #autism #adhd #neurodiversity #education #employment #disability #advocacy #inclusion #dei #intersectionality #communication #stigma #bias #ableism #culture #accommodations #pride #boundaries #nothingaboutuswithoutus #hr #discrimination #systems #accessibility

Last week our very own Harvey Matthewson delivered a keynote at Farnborough Airshow 2024 entitled 'Disability Inclusion: Why Bother?' Harvey highlighted how disability inclusion can be a smart business decision. Reasons included the following: ✈ Reduced strain on public services Getting people with disabilities into work increases activity levels and creates a sense of purpose which improves mental health. This reduces reliance on public services which benefits us all. ✈ Increased Revenue Including lived disability experience in your workforce allows organisations to make their processes and customer services more accessible. This allows organisations to connect with 16% of the global population who have a disability and may have turned away from your services. Most importantly, if services are accessible they are likely to be easier for all of your customers. Who wouldn't want that! ✈ Widens the Available Talent pool By creating an inclusive workplace your organisation will have access to a untapped pool of disabled talent. This increases the available talent pool and may help to begin tackling the aviation skills shortage. For more good reasons to join our crew visit www.equalskiescharter.org

Accessible tourism is critical and so important. People with disability travel for work and leisure, and the fear of the lost or broken wheelchair is a very real anxiety trigger. It's refreshing to see a session on Protecting the Safety, Rights, and Dignity of Air Travelers with Disabilities will be held at the White House. I look forward to discussing this topic at the Destination Australia conference on March 13th, with Ryan Smith and Carly Findlay OAM as we discuss "Broadening the diversity and accessibility of travel and tourism". Disability access ramps empower individuals with disabilities to travel independently and participate fully in society. Whether on public transport, such as trains, taxis or personal vehicles, these ramps ensure safe and efficient boarding and disembarking for wheelchair users, reducing the need for assistance. This not only enhances freedom and autonomy but also lowers barriers to employment, education, and social activities. By facilitating independent driving or passenger travel and minimizing the risk of injury, disability vehicle access ramps are essential for fostering accessibility and inclusion across all modes of transportation. International Disability Day: A Message of Strength and Resilience On this International Disability Day, let us celebrate the strength, courage, and potential within every individual. I firmly believe that 90% of any disability can be overcome through mental strength, resilience, and sheer grit. Challenges may test us, but they do not define us. To my disabled friends: If I can do it, so can you. Through education, proper skill development, and unwavering determination, you can unlock opportunities and achieve self-reliance. Remember, your ability to overcome lies in your mindset, not your limitations. Together, let’s build a world where everyone thrives with dignity and purpose.
