We were thrilled to co-host an event earlier this week with BSI exploring the evolving ISO Net Zero Standard and its impact on advising businesses on their decarbonisation journeys. Together with other Net Zero service providers, we tackled shared challenges and opportunities in Net Zero governance. Key insights included: 🌍 How consequential leveraging the international standards system and quality infrastructure will be for Net Zero governance, in terms of increased accountability for companies, and because of the connection between standards, trade, and regulation 🏢 The unique role consultancies play in driving best practices and adoption of the upcoming ISO standard 🌱 The importance of engaging in Net Zero governance, such as participating in the ISO Net Zero Standard development process as the Carbon Trust is, to derisk advice, especially on emerging topics like carbon dioxide removals 💡 The role the Carbon Trust is playing in providing advice to clients aligned to the ISO Net Zero Guidelines, which will form the foundation of the ISO standard Special thanks to our external speakers Shana Gallagher for explaining how the ISO Net Zero Standard that is currently in development will change how Net Zero is governed globally, and to John Lang for walking everyone through the Net Zero 'conveyor belt' model. And thanks to our experts Imogen Catterall, Sarah Jardine, and John Kazer for sharing their insights.

🌍 Exciting Development for ISO Net Zero Standards! 🌍 Starting June 2024, BSI will lead an international process through ISO’s Climate Change Management Committee to convert the ISO Net Zero Guidelines into the first international standard on net zero for organizations. By using this upcoming international standard as a foundation, organizations can: 📍 Develop a credible net zero strategy 📍 De-risk their approach to net zero action 📍 Avoid delaying urgent steps 📍 Prepare for the future net zero economy BSI conducted case studies of four organizations, including interviews with relevant stakeholders. Some findings and outputs from these studies and interviews have been included in this report. This report reflects the experiences of four such organizations, showcasing tangible changes made, their remaining challenges, and their major lessons learned. This report sets out BSI’s conclusions based on industry knowledge and opinion of the information obtained during the case studies. BSI also shares some of the insights for further reference. Sustainability reporting and ISO - International Organization for Standardization and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) management system standards... The connection is impossible to miss for those who work on both sustainability reporting and have expertise with ISO management system standards. ISO 9001 already lays down the base of your "governance" reporting. Environmental management? That's ISO 14001. Information security? ISO/IEC 27001... Social responsibility? Why don't you take a look at ISO 26000? Carbon footprint quantification? That's ISO 14064-1 for you. Water footpring: ISO 14046... Anti-bribery (as part of "Governance")? You have ISO 37001... Supply chain governance --> ISO 20400. And many others. The attached video is from a presentation I made for representatives of 10 Member States of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to outline the importance of ESG-focused ISO management system standards as a tool for organisations striving to prepare sustainability reports. Hope it helps. #sustainability #sustainabilitymanagement #ISO #ESG https://lnkd.in/d5T-R6Kn

Impact of ISO 14068 Replacing PAS 2060 The transition from PAS 2060 to ISO 14068 is a significant development in the field of carbon neutrality. While PAS 2060 has been a widely used framework, ISO 14068 brings a more robust, international, and verifiable standard. Key Insights * Increased Rigor and Credibility: ISO 14068 introduces a more stringent framework for achieving and demonstrating carbon neutrality. This will enhance the credibility of carbon neutrality claims. * Global Alignment: As an ISO standard, 14068 aligns with international best practices, making it easier for organizations to operate across borders. * Focus on Carbon Reduction: The new standard places a stronger emphasis on reducing emissions before offsetting, promoting a more sustainable approach. * Enhanced Transparency: ISO 14068 requires greater transparency in carbon accounting and offsetting, providing stakeholders with more reliable information. * Potential for Increased Costs: Implementing ISO 14068 may require additional resources and expertise, potentially increasing costs for organizations. How to Prepare * Understand the New Standard: Familiarize yourself with the requirements and principles of ISO 14068. * Assess Your Current Practices: Evaluate your organization's carbon footprint management practices against the new standard. * Prioritize Carbon Reduction: Develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce emissions, aligning with the hierarchical approach of ISO 14068. * Strengthen Data Management: Improve your data collection and management systems to ensure accurate carbon accounting. * Seek Expert Guidance: Consider engaging with consultants or experts to support the transition process. * Build Stakeholder Trust: Communicate your commitment to carbon neutrality and the steps you are taking to achieve it. * Plan for Certification: If certification is required, start planning the process well in advance. By proactively preparing for the transition to ISO 14068, organizations can not only meet the new requirements but also strengthen their sustainability credentials and gain a competitive advantage.
