Picking software in 2024 is hard. Releasing a full video next week on the 6 areas to consider but wanted to share this bit about the 2 main traps to *not* fall into when picking new software: 1️⃣ Shiny Tool Syndrome: • Falling prey to marketing: Modern software is as much about marketing as functionality, leading teams to adopt based on trendiness, not necessity. • Buzzword blindness: Teams expect flashy features to magically solve deep-rooted process and strategy challenges. • Superficial implementation: Often, new software is introduced with a simple "Here's your login, good luck!" approach, leading to underutilization and frequent tool-switching as teams search for greener pastures. ⠀2️⃣ Purposeless Procurement: • Lack of direction: Teams select software without a clear strategy, like setting sail without a map. • "Figure it out later" fallacy: The "we'll figure it out as we go" approach is as effective as hoping spaghetti sticks to the wall. • Missing the 'why': Teams often aren't starting with the "What challenge are we solving?" and they don't involve actual end users to their software options with real needs and wants.
