Read the full statement from CMBC's CEO, Paul Thomas Davies, regarding the potential impact of high fees as part of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the UK.
As explored by The Times and The Telegraph this week, CMBC have shared our view, alongside our wider industry, on the high illustrative cost of glass under EPR.
Sustainability is an area of huge importance to our business, and to brewers across the UK. If left unrevised, however, the current costs will restrict industry’s ability to invest and see smaller, independent brewers struggle in the face of an already challenging economic situation.
Only by Government and industry working together can we achieve a positive way forward that supports our shared aim to boost the economy, improve our environment, and ensure a thriving brewing sector in the UK.
Paul Davies, CEO of CMBC, said: “CMBC has significant ambitions in sustainability as part of our Together Towards ZERO and Beyond ESG programme, and achieving ZERO Packaging Waste by ensuring 100% of our packaging is recyclable, reusable or renewable by 2030.
“We are committed to working collaboratively with Government to deliver a circular economy, and doing our part to support a more sustainable future for the UK. However, we share the industry concern that the scale of these extra costs, at such a delicate stage for the sector still grappling with high energy and material prices, will have a negative impact on bottled beers.
“We would urge the Government to hold constructive discussions with industry about how EPR could be implemented in a way that delivers our shared ambitions for sustainability, whilst also supporting and preserving our treasured national beer and pub culture.”
