🎓Proud Moment Alert! 🎓 I am thrilled to share a snapshot of my graduation diploma from the Institute of Urban Development Studies, where I earned my Master of Arts in Urban Management in 2009. This milestone marks a culmination of rigorous study and dedication. 📚 My thesis, titled "Inefficient Land Title Registration and its Impact on the Development of Chiro Town," investigated key challenges and provided insights that I hope will contribute to better urban planning and management practices. I am proud of achieving a score of B+ on this critical work. This journey wouldn't have been possible without the support of my professors, peers, and family who have guided and encouraged me every step of the way. 🔗 I am looking to connect with fellow urban development professionals and experts to exchange ideas and explore potential collaborations that can drive forward our shared goals for sustainable urban growth. 👉 Feel free to reach out if you’re interested in discussing urban development challenges, or if you have insights to share from your own experiences in similar projects. #UrbanDevelopment #UrbanManagement #Graduation #MasterOfArts #SustainableDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth #Networking

Should be an interesting read.
Dear friends, I am very happy to share that my next book has a cover and a publication date of September 24, 2024, as part of the University of Pittsburgh Press series on Culture, Politics, and the Built Environment. Allow me to say that this is certainly my most ambitious book so far, an attempt to both denounce the Eurocentrism of our knowledge base and elevate concepts from and about the Americas that I believe could be the basis of a larger collective project of developing Spatial Theories for our continent. When we get back to syllabi and semester planning in August I will publish a series of 12 posts, one for each chapter + intro. I am sure one of those chapters will fit well in your class discussions and I would love to present it to your students this coming year, whether in person or on the devilish but useful zoom. Today I leave you with a blurb from one of the anonymous reviewers: “This book is a much-needed addition to the body of knowledge that underpins the scholarship of architecture and urbanism. It is a game changer. Everyone knows there is institutionalized racism and Eurocentricism in what and how we think about the built environment. Everyone knows, but there seems to be a lack of imagination among most scholars of the discipline when it comes to escaping the intellectual status quo. Lara clearly has been studying the issues addressed in this book for some time and was well-prepared to take this project on. The range of disciplines and depth of investigation of important works of scholarship that are addressed are remarkable”.

New book out!! When we were preparing the Rethink the City MOOC, we were constantly labelled as the course about the urban challenges of the Global South. Despite a great share of students coming from the Global North and presenting cases from their local context, it was hard to avoid it. We never had a problem with the Global South label itself, but the term seemed quite limiting. We believe the term "Global South" pushes for homogenization while at the same time, it creates a barrier to South-North learning. Many cities/neighbourhoods in the so-called Global North face similar challenges of cities/neighbourhoods in the Global South. I would like to highlight the discussion in chapter 1 where we propose that the term "underrepresented geographies" might help go beyond the North-South divide and foster a cross-learning experience based on exposing cases and local challenges that are common globally. I'm honoured to be one of the co-editors of this book, which I hope will support other teachers out there innovating with online learning together with underrepresented geographies :) You can download it for free here 👇

🌍The civic role of universities 🖋️ By Mariana Auad Proença "How Academies Drive Inclusive Urban Planning: Bridging Knowledge and Communities?" Participatory and inclusive urban planning is more crucial than ever in addressing modern challenges. But where do we start? 📚Academies are hubs of innovation, knowledge, and community engagement. They teach future planners to listen, collaborate, and design with people, not just for them. From workshops to urban labs, these institutions connect theory with practice, shaping the cities of tomorrow. In our latest blog, Mariana explore: Why academia is vital in participatory planning? How it empowers communities through knowledge sharing? 🤝Examples of successful partnerships between universities and urban initiatives. What role do you think educational institutions should play in shaping inclusive cities? Share your thoughts below!
