We were delighted to attend the Parliamentary Friends of Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness event at Parliament House today. Thanks to ACD President, Dr Adriene Lee, Prof H Peter Soyer and Prof Victoria Mar who delivered skin checks to parliamentarians which was a great opportunity to discuss the importance of prevention and early detection. Hi everyone, I am an ACS CAN Legislative Ambassador for the American Cancer Society. Congress has returned to Washington, D.C. and they are getting back to work today. There are many issues for them to consider, but there’s one that has been sidelined for too long. There are new, groundbreaking multi-cancer early detection tests that can screen for dozens of cancers at once and help more people detect cancer early. These innovative tests could truly save many lives! But only if people can access them. A bill to create a pathway for Medicare to cover these tests once they are FDA-approved and shown to have clinical benefit is currently the most cosponsored health-related bill in Congress. And you helped make that happen. But despite this widespread, bipartisan support, this bill still hasn’t passed. Now is the time. Congress only has a few weeks left to pass year-end legislation. In addition to helping to make these multi-cancer early detection tests more accessible, we also need Congress to increase funding for lifesaving cancer research and improve access to breast and cervical cancer screenings for those who need them most. Send a message today to tell your members of Congress that cancer can’t wait. Please share your message to them by clicking the link below;

#WorldOvarianCancerDay 8th May Did you know... - Ovarian cancer is the 8th most common cancer amongst women - The 8th most common cause of death from cancer amongst women - Over 324,000 women are diagnosed of ovarian cancer - Over 207,000 women die with ovarian cancer every year globally Ovarian cancer is not a singular diagnosis, rather it is an umbrella term for a multitude of different types of cancer that affect the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the primary peritoneal cavity. It is estimated that there are more than 30 different types of ovarian cancer, and there is a very wide variation in incidence and outlook in terms of the different types. Ovarian cancer is the most lethal of the female cancers for which there is no reliable screening test, and every person assigned female at birth is at risk. With delays in diagnoses due to this lack of screening and because symptoms are often confused with other, less severe, illness, most people are diagnosed once the cancer has already spread, making it more difficult to treat. While every woman is at risk, ovarian cancer is overlooked and underfunded. https://lnkd.in/gkNJYEBz

Cancer coalitions strive to develop data-driven, evidence-based policy agendas that are feasible based on local political context and cultural preferences. Yet sometimes partners within a coalition are hesitant to fully participate in advocacy. Join my colleague Katie Bathje and the American Cancer Society on Dec. 12th for the webinar “Advocacy vs Lobbying: What’s the Difference?” (3:00pm-4:00pm EST). You'll hear from two leading experts: Deanna Henkle -American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and Rebecca Birch -Susan G Komen who will help you understand the difference between advocacy and lobbying, how to identify and utilize effective messaging strategies and identify data sources that can support advocacy efforts in cancer control. Thanks to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for funding support for this cancer coalition webinar. 👉 Register today 👈https://lnkd.in/gys6FUV3 LinkedIn (1) L vs A Webinar Dec. 12+2024 Larger Graphic promo 1.png

I’m a firm believer of learning directly from the experience of people living with disease. This is central to how we drive #PatientPoweredProgress and shape the future at Boehringer Ingelheim, in partnership with patients. That’s why the words of Larry and Jeff, two people who’ve experienced first-hand the power of advocacy, are so crucial in understanding the importance of #patientempowerment. I invite you to click the link in the post below to discover what they have to say about ‘The power of patient advocacy in cancer care’. #lifeforward #patientengagement #patientadvocacy
Patient advocacy plays a pivotal role in the lives of people with cancer. Jeff Dunn, the president of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), explains the significance of empowering people with the knowledge and support they need throughout their journey. On World Cancer Day and beyond, we support the UICC’s efforts to close the care gap. Through advocating for patients, we believe we can make a meaningful impact in transforming the lives of people living with cancer. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, I’d like to take a moment to recognize the importance of this cause and the impact it has on so many lives. Breast cancer affects millions of people worldwide and our collective efforts – from raising awareness through pink ribbon recognition to supporting research – are vital in the fight against it. Early detection and preventative care are critical. However, navigating the screenings and treatment options can be challenging, especially with the demands of daily life. That’s why it’s essential for ALL of us – not just in October but year-round – to encourage regular checkups and self-exams. Offering gentle reminders to schedule screenings, volunteering a hand with some of the obstacles that might get in the way of appointments, and being there to provide encouragement will continue to support everyone to put their health at the forefront. For those seeking more information, here are a few resources: - Susan G. Komen Foundation: Offers guidance on breast cancer screening, support groups, and advocacy initiatives (komen.org). - National Breast Cancer Foundation: Provides free mammograms and patient support services (nationalbreastcancer.org). - FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered): A go-to for people with genetic risk factors (facingourrisk.org). Let’s keep these resources close and keep this awareness alive year-round. Together we can make a lasting impact! #BreastCancerAwareness #PreventativeCare #Advocacy

WHAT IS WORLD OVARIAN CANCER DAY? May 8 – World Ovarian Cancer Day Established in 2013 by a group of leaders from ovarian cancer advocacy organizations around the world, May 8 – World Ovarian Cancer Day, is the one day of the year we globally raise our voices in solidarity in the fight against ovarian cancer. While the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition works on many fronts, World Ovarian Cancer Day is our flagship awareness-raising initiative, and is the key date in our calendar. Supported by close to 200 organizations from around the world, our social media reach grows exponentially every year, with 2023 directly reaching over 192 million up from 20 million in 2022. Our partner organizations, as small as kitchen table-based patient advocacy groups in rural communities, to national healthcare associations based in major metropolitan areas, all come together as one to raise awareness about the disease.
