𝐀𝐈 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐫𝐮𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲: 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 "𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞" 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 The first results from a recent Critical Assessment of Computational Hit-finding Experiments (CACHE) competition offer a fascinating glimpse into the potential and limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) for drug discovery in “undruggable targets”. The competition challenged participants to develop AI models that could identify promising drug candidates for a notoriously "hard-to-drug" protein target: the WD40 repeat (WDR) domain of LRRK2, a protein linked to Parkinson's disease. While the results indicate some positive inroads, they also highlight the significant work still needed before AI can revolutionize the field. 𝐀 𝐆𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐩𝐞 The competition yielded promising results. The 23 teams collectively identified over 2,000 potential drug candidates, offering a glimmer of hope in the ongoing battle against Parkinson's.
