Small-scale developments in England will now be legally required to deliver a 10 per cent Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) on housing, industrial and commercial projects to protect nature and habitats from the impact of construction. Drew Davy, Senior Sustainability Insights Manager at Grosvenor Property UK – which has been voluntarily delivering BNG since 2022 – said: "It's crucial that all developments and construction projects – regardless of their size – place biodiversity at their heart. Be it to help reduce urban heat island effects or mitigate flood risk, increasing biodiversity is a core component of climate resilience." “𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐖𝐚𝐲: 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝" We are excited to share insights from our online 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒑𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒑 that brought together community leaders, experts, government officials, and civil society organisations from #Assam, a highly flood-prone state in #NorthEast #India. The aim was to explore innovative strategies with the communities, develop diverse perspectives, and finally integrate them into a unified plan that promotes green infrastructure and advocates nature-based solutions. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆-𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 (𝑵𝒃𝑺)? Nature-based solutions bring together the resilience of ecosystems and the prosperity of humanity. They are more than just conservation efforts, these are innovative approaches to protecting and restoring our natural world while tackling the toughest social, economic, and environmental challenges. By embracing the wisdom of nature, human well-being and biodiversity thrive in harmony. 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑵𝒃𝑺 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒅? Nature-based solutions are crucial as they harness the power of ecosystems to combat climate change, restore degraded lands, and protect biodiversity. They offer sustainable, cost-effective ways to enhance resilience, support communities, and ensure a livable future, making them essential in addressing our planet's escalating environmental crises. Three working groups at the 𝐺𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝐷𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑝, examined the application of NbS focusing on 𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, and 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. Each working group, which included community members as well as experts, engaged in in-depth discussions, exploring various methods and their practical applications in detail. Methods such as 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 and 𝐯𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐠𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 were proposed to tackle erosion and sedimentation challenges in the rivers and floodplains. The session concluded with a clear roadmap for the implementation of nature-based solutions, and each group took up responsibilities for the next phase. The workshop ended with a strong commitment to the cause and determination to make the interventions a success. The participants also set in place a monitoring & evaluation framework, for detailed planning, community engagement, and application of the NbS that were decided on. #Pragya #NatureBasedSolutions #GreenInfrastructure #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #CommunityEngagement #Resilience #FloodManagement #ClimateSmartAgriculture #EnvironmentalSustainability #EcosystemRestoration #GreenDevelopment #SustainableFuture #NatureConservation #DisasterResilience

In a time of rapid urbanization, cities and nature are often seen as incompatible: either biodiversity suffers as cities grow or cities are contained to protect nature. There is no question that human activities impact biodiversity in multiple ways – deforestation, habitat loss, changes in soil, water and chemical compositions, etc. But with more than 70 per cent of the world’s population expected to be living in cities by 2050 and about half of the world’s GDP highly or moderately reliant on nature, according to the World Economic Forum, we must stop thinking that cities and nature cannot co-exist.

An absolute pleasure to have worked on the new IENE policy brief (alongside my expert co-authors Léa FIESCHI-MERIC, Anthony Herrel, Julie de Bouville). Uniquely, the brief aligns amphibian conservation actions with TNFD's four pillars and LEAP approach (e.g. across governance, strategy, risk and impact management, and metrics and targets). The brief provides specific steps, such as ecological field surveys, impact assessments, habitat creation, mitigation measures, connectivity/crossings, strategy and educational initiatives. Additionally, it links these conservation efforts with wider corporate sustainability reporting requirements under other frameworks like CSRD and SBTN, promoting transparency and accountability in alignment with TNFD guidelines. Why is this relevant and not just more collateral........ Ultimately, the brief seeks to ensure conservation measures on the ground are effectively integrated into corporate strategy, providing much of the missing coherence and meaningful action. By linking practical interventions, such as amphibian crossings and habitat creation, with corporate sustainability frameworks, we start to meaningfully bridge the gap between local ecological needs and strategic corporate commitments, ensuring that every action contributes to internal mainstreaming and coherent nature-positive outcomes for the Transport sector. #Biodiversity #Sustainability #TransportInfrastructure #TNFD #SBTN #AmphibianConservation #ESG #SustainableDevelopment #Transport4nature #COP16 #Biodiversa+ https://lnkd.in/d_ZCVEjb
🌍Policy Brief: Integrating amphibian conservation into transport infrastructure projects and reporting under the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) In the face of the biodiversity crisis, transport infrastructure (TI) organisations must rethink their impact on nature. With 40.7% of amphibians endangered, TI plays a significant role in biodiversity decline, driving habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and invasive species. Our latest policy brief offers key guidance to mitigate the negative impacts of TI on amphibians, focusing on: 1️⃣ Avoiding ecological impacts from the outset. 2️⃣ Implementing research-backed mitigation measures. 3️⃣ Abandoning projects with unmanageable impacts. This aligns with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and SBTN frameworks, supporting organisations in meeting CSRD & ESRS standards—driving sustainability, accountability, and a positive impact for all. 🌍 Léa FIESCHI-MERIC Rory Canavan #AnthonyHerrel Rodolphe COULON Laura Clevenot Elise Bon Cora Cremezi Charlet #Biodiversity #Sustainability #TransportInfrastructure #TNFD #SBTN #AmphibianConservation #ESG #SustainableDevelopment https://lnkd.in/d_ZCVEjb

What role could the private sector play in the restoration of our coastal and marine environments? Historically, the cost of marine and coastal conservation has been looked after by taxpayers, rate payers or community groups. However, as we face ongoing environmental degradation coupled with a changing climate and a biodiversity crisis, there is a need for different funding pathways. Thanks to our collaboration with EnviroStrat, we’ve released research into supporting business and restorative activities that are environmentally sustainable, align with community and iwi needs, and can create a return 🔽 https://lnkd.in/g66mivfs

Co-creating cities through Indigenous knowledge and nature-based solutions Biodiversity commitments are usually implemented nationally, but it is the cities where many infrastructure and development decisions take place. Today marked the beginning of the World Green Infrastructure Congress 2024 in Auckland! Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) are still underutilized in New Zealand, despite their significant potential to sequester carbon and deliver numerous other benefits like enhancing biodiversity, improving stormwater management, boosting climate and heat resilience, and supporting overall well-being. I was thrilled to share some of the exploratory work we’ve done at Auckland Council to estimate the sequestration potential for our region through various interventions within the built environment as well as across the rest of the region. We estimated the potential across different Auckland Unitary Plan zones from the uptake and implementation of: 🟢Green and living roofs 🟢Converting impervious surfaces to grass, native shrubs, or small native forests 🟢Increasing riparian planting, covercrop, hedges, plant biodiversity across grasslands and farmlands 🟢Building community gardens 🟢Implementing regenerative agricultural practices 🟢Expanding our mangroves and saltmarshes In a realistic, yet ambitious, scenario, we could boost our regional sequestration potential by at least 26%, bringing us closer to achieving #NetZero by 2050. Curious about how NbS can drive Climate Mitigation for the region? Get in touch and I will gladly share the presentation and findings. Thanks Stuti Kumar, Ayushi Kachhara, Grant Lawrence for their contributions! #NBS #livingroof #greenroof #stormwater #naturebased #Carbon #FutureDream
