Toolbox Talk:Preventing Falls in the Workplace and at Home Good morning, everyone. Before we start our shift today, I want to take a minute to talk about a critical safety topic that affects us both at work and at home: slips, trips andfalls. Falls are a leading cause of injury and death in the workplace and at home. According to the World Health Organization, falls are responsible for over 646,000 fatal falls globally each year. In our workplace, falls can occur due to slippery surfaces, uneven flooring, or equipment malfunctions. At home, falls can happen due to clutter, poor lighting, or uneven surfaces. So, what can we do to prevent falls? Here are a few strategies: - Clean up spills and clutter immediately - Use handrails when walking up or down stairs - Ensure good lighting in all areas - Wear proper footwear with good traction - Take regular breaks to rest and stretch Let's all take a moment to think about how we can apply these strategies to our daily lives, both at work and at home. Remember, falls can happen to anyone, but by taking simple precautions, we can significantly reduce the risk. Let's work together to stay safe and healthy. Thank you, and let's get to work!

🍂 Fall Yardwork Safety: The Do’s and Don’ts 🍂 It’s one of the most beautiful times of the year–but looks can be deceiving! As you get ready to tackle those fall leaves and outdoor chores, keep these safety tips in mind to prevent injuries. ⬇️The DO’s… ✅ Use Proper Lifting Techniques: Bend at your knees, not your back, when lifting heavy bags of leaves or yard waste. ✅ Wear Protective Gear: Gloves, eye protection, and sturdy footwear will help keep you safe from sharp tools and debris. ✅ Check Your Tools: Ensure your rakes, ladders, and other equipment are in good condition to avoid accidents. ✅ Stay Hydrated: Even though it’s cooler, working outdoors can still lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of water. ✅ Take Breaks: Yardwork can be tiring. Take short breaks to avoid overexertion, especially if you’re doing heavy lifting or using power tools. ✅ Use Ladders Safely: Always place ladders on flat, stable ground. Have someone hold the ladder for added safety when climbing. ⬇️The DON’Ts… ❌ Don’t Overload Bags: Avoid overstuffing bags or bins, which can make them too heavy to lift safely. ❌ Don’t Use Tools Improperly: Never use tools for purposes they weren’t designed for—this can lead to injuries. ❌ Don’t Wear Loose Clothing: Loose or baggy clothes can get caught in equipment or branches. ❌ Don’t Work Alone: If you’re doing risky tasks like using a ladder or heavy equipment, have someone nearby just in case. ❌ Don’t Ignore Weather Conditions: Wet leaves and cold, wet surfaces can be slippery. Wait until the weather improves if conditions are unsafe. We hope you stay safe while enjoying the lovely autumn weather! 🍁 #fallsafety #yardworksafety #lancasterems #autumn #safetytips #AutumnSafety #EMS #PublicHealth

This June Windemuller joins the National Safety Council (NSC) and organizations across the nation to raise awareness during National Safety Month and highlight efforts to prevent injury and death. This week we want to focus on SLIPS, TRIPS, AND FALLS. Following highway crashes, falls to a lower level are the second leading cause of all workplace fatalities and first in our construction industry, according to Injury Facts. Remember the Four A’s: ASK yourself before beginning work – are safeguards in place, such as guardrails, is the base of a ladder on a firm, solid surface, does the scaffolding meet OSHA’s standard? Be AWARE and keep an eye out for possible hazards – are there spills on the floor, clutter on stairs, obstacles blocking walkways, or cords trailing on the floor? ADDRESS hazards – don’t assume someone else will take care of it. Take the initiative, clean up manageable skills, report if necessary and alert whomever is in charge. ALWAYS keep safety on top of mind – watch where you’re going, don’t walk too fast, don’t carry objects that obstruct your view and avoid distractions. Wear appropriate footwear, be aware of icy or wet surfaces and report every fall, even minor slips. 🚧 **Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls on the Job!** 🚧 Falls are a leading cause of workplace injuries and fatalities. Here are key tips to enhance safety: 1️⃣ **Maintain Clean Workspaces:** Ensure all places of employment, passageways, storerooms, and walking-working surfaces are kept clean, orderly, and sanitary as per OSHA standard 1910.22. 2️⃣ **Wear Slip-Resistant Shoes:** NIOSH recommends footwear resistant to oil, chemicals, and heat for wet or contaminated surfaces. 3️⃣ **Address Fall Hazards:** Falls are particularly concerning in the residential construction sector. Despite some safety knowledge, consistent application of safety practices is crucial. Employers should foster a culture where employees actively participate in safety and feel empowered to speak up. 4️⃣ **Identify Contributing Factors:** Factors like walking surfaces, obstacles, footwear, and contaminants often overlap. Address these comprehensively to reduce risks. 5️⃣ **Correct Hazards Promptly:** Hazardous conditions like sharp objects, loose boards, and spills must be corrected before use. If immediate repair isn't possible, guard the hazard to prevent employee access. 6️⃣ **Select Appropriate Flooring:** Choose flooring with a high static coefficient of friction (CoF of 0.5 or greater) for safer surfaces. Let’s work together to prevent falls and create safer workplaces! 🦺👷♂️ #WorkplaceSafety #FallPrevention #ConstructionSafety #NationalSafetyMonth #Selcon

𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁: 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 This Monday, we will start the week with an important issue that impacts workplaces across the UK: slips, trips, and falls. These incidents are a leading cause of workplace injuries, but we can significantly reduce their occurrence with the right measures. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), slips and trips accounted for 32% of workplace injuries. These incidents result in personal suffering and have significant financial implications, costing employers millions annually. 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 1. Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential slip and trip hazards. https://lnkd.in/dkyrUkCB 2. Provide ongoing training for employees on preventing slips, trips, and falls and encourage them to report any hazards they observe. https://lnkd.in/dxtq3d3G 3. Maintain clean and tidy workspaces. Regularly clean floors and ensure any spills are immediately addressed. 4. Use appropriate cleaning methods and products to ensure floors are not left slippery. 5. Ensure employees wear suitable footwear with good grip, particularly in environments where floors may become wet or oily. 6. Provide guidance on choosing the right footwear for specific work conditions. 7. Use slip-resistant flooring materials in areas prone to wet conditions. 8. Regularly inspect and maintain floors to ensure they are in good condition. Repair or replace any damaged flooring promptly. 9. Use clear signage to warn of slippery conditions, such as wet floors. 10. Ensure adequate lighting in all areas, particularly in walkways, staircases, and other high-traffic zones. 11. Use entrance matting to reduce the amount of water and debris tracked into buildings. 12. Slip-resistant tapes and treatments should be applied on stairs and other high-risk areas. These are just a few things you can implement to a culture of safety. Together, we can create safer work environments and reduce the incidence of these preventable injuries. Stay safe! ⚖️ Cost vs. Quality in PPE When you're considering the balance of cost vs. quality for your facility's PPE choices, don’t skimp on the most important factors: ✅ Material and Durability: Your shoe covers, aprons, and gowns should be fluid impervious, tear-resistant, and capable of providing adequate protection against pathogens and other potentially harmful substances. Choose protective clothing made from >2ml polyethylene blend materials. ✅ Safety Standards and Certifications: Look for garments that comply with industry regulations and certifications, such as those set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). ✅ Comfort and Fit: Choose disposable garments with features like adjustable closures, breathable fabrics, and ergonomic designs. Choose one-size-fits-all gowns, aprons, shoe covers, coveralls, and jumpsuits to save the cost of stocking multiple sizes of each option. To ensure your selected PPE meets the necessary quality standards for your specific facility, request samples of the products you're considering.
