Raytheon has delivered the first AN/TPY-2 radar for Saudi Arabia. The AN/TPY-2 is a missile defence radar that can detect, track and discriminate ballistic missiles in multiple phases of flight. This is the first AN/TPY-2 radar with a complete Gallium Nitride, or GaN, populated array in the system. GaN is a glasslike material that offers key advantages over other radio frequency semiconductors in energy efficiency, weight and power output. GaN technology provides greater sensitivity to increase range as well as expand surveillance capacity. This technology is also a key enabler in allowing the AN/TPY-2 radar to support the hypersonic mission. “The latest AN/TPY-2 radar is now in a different class with Raytheon making more than 50 enhancements to the radar,” said Paul Ferraro, President, Air & Space Defense Systems, Raytheon. “These upgrades will help Saudi Arabia to better defend itself from missile threats and will additionally benefit the entire fleet with enhanced sensing capability.” #defence #saudiarabia #missiles #aerospaceanddefense

During the Air, Space & Cyber 2024 conference held in Washington, Lockheed Martin revealed details about the AGM-158XR, a new variant of its cruise missile, continuing the development of the JASSM (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile) and LRASM (Long Range Anti-Ship Missile) families. According to company representatives, the technologies and solutions used in the XR model could potentially be adapted for both the airborne JASSM and anti-ship LRASM variants. Notably, while LRASM has primarily been integrated with selected aircraft platforms, tests have confirmed its capability for deployment from Mk 41 vertical launch systems. A key feature of the AGM-158XR is its extended combat range, which is unofficially estimated to approach 1,500 kilometres. The development of the XR variant is currently funded by Lockheed Martin; however, with the intensifying global geopolitical landscape, it is possible that the U.S. Department of Defense may allocate additional funding for the project. ✔ There are some sensible proposals within this manifesto from ADS given the needs being placed on the defence sector. But in terms of finance the report states: "The next Government should collaborate with financial institutions to ensure that companies in our sectors, especially defence SMEs, have access to the necessary financial services and investment support they need to grow and provide key national security capabilities." ❔ But this needs to be seen against the limited scope of the disruptive technology DASA competitions covering up to 15 proposals with £50k of funding each. Given the speed of innovation we are seeing in Ukraine it feels like ADS should be pushing for more funding flexibility at the feasibility end of the development lifecycle to allow our military platforms to keep pace with the current realities in live conflicts. #generalelection #defence #innovation #funding

The priority focus should be on enhancing our supersonic cruise missile interceptor capability through reliable, cost effective, improvements, period. This may involve a combination of new system architecture, cheaper manufacturing components/raw materials, supply chain resiliency/onshoring (semiconductors) and the rapid fielding of prototypes that ensure this capability is delivered to the U.S. military in an expeditious manner.
