Since the arrival of Habitat for Humanity International and its Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter in Peru, comprehensive market studies have been conducted to understand the building behavior and housing habits of vulnerable families in urban areas. Subsequently, we faced the challenge of explaining in simple terms how this process works — a process that isn't initially easy to grasp. Four housing typologies were identified, documenting the lengthy journey of up to 30 years that a family may undergo to achieve the dream of owning a home. Since then, the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter has established itself as the leading facilitator within the progressive housing ecosystem, a term we coined in 2018 to describe homes that are continually under construction over the years, sometimes taking decades to complete. Last week AARP Oregon gave a presentation to our leadership team at Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity. #LearningDrivesProgress Did you know that for the first time in U.S. history, older adults will soon outnumber children? By 2050, nearly half of the older population will be non-white, emphasizing the need for inclusive, equitable, and age-friendly communities. Yet, 54% of American communities lack the policies and services needed to support independent living as we age. At Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity, we're embracing this challenge by incorporating universal design principles into our work. These homes are built to accommodate all stages of life—providing accessibility, safety, and adaptability for people of all ages and abilities. Walkable neighborhoods, accessible homes, and thoughtful land use improve quality of life for families, individuals, and seniors alike.
