Norway is one of the happiest countries in the world, with a per capita GDP of over 100,000USD. Nordea Bank predicts “better times ahead for both the Norwegian economy and the housing market,” in spite of global challenges like inflation.   So, what does Norway have to do with my work?  What does any of this have to do with developing economies? --- Development professionals are encouraged to look to “near peer” nations for solutions—and I will always champion that approach.  We can also look for “aspirational peers,” countries whose success we want to replicate, even if we’re not there yet.  Looking at the Norwegian economy, it’s easy to identify key reasons for their success: natural resources and a long history of investments in education and social services.  “Norway is now the largest energy provider to Europe and ranks as the 4th largest exporter of natural gas globally,” according to the US ITA. Norway’s merchant shipping fleet is also one of the largest and most modern in the world.  It should be clear that countries like Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo have a radically different history with radically different factors impacting potential growth.  Still, Norway’s example demonstrates a few key takeaways that leaders in developing nations need to internalize. In #Canada, economic pressures are highlighted by soaring real estate prices and the depreciation of the Canadian dollar, presenting hurdles for both local and #internationalbusiness dealings. Each region presents unique #investmentopportunities and challenges, reflecting the diverse and dynamic nature of global investment landscapes. What is happening in #Portugal? Guilherme Corga, Sales Director at VITALIS Asesor Independiente, shared that Portugal remains an attractive destination for #investors, particularly in the golden visa space, drawing significant interest from international #investors, including a noticeable influx from Mexico. The real estate market continues to thrive, supported by foreign #investment, although local wage levels make housing expensive for Portuguese nationals. The Minister must have been otherwise occupied when Professor Breznitz was the Clifford Clarke Economist at Finance Canada (2021-2022). I was hopeful when she appointed him to the position — “responsible for new economic thinking and the restructuring of the Canadian economy”. There have been some positive steps. For example, changes to the Competition Act signalled a move away from 30+ year commitment to the monopolization of our economy. Three cheers for that! We still don’t want to buy Canadian, so much so that the federal program that actually procured innovative solutions from Canadian innovators was cut in half by ISED. It had a great RoI but that still didn’t keep the axe away. The “top-heavy management cadre slows down decision-making, adds costs, dilutes accountability and disempowers managers and their staff. And, according to the UN’s eGovernment Development Index, Canada has dropped from 3rd to 47th globally while, Ukraine has risen from being the 102nd most digitized nation on earth to being the 5th… while it has been fighting an existential war with Russia. Our economy and government are still designed for the tangible/industrial era, yet it’s intangible assets like data & IP that make up the predominant source of wealth in the world. We can fix this.
