ICE cars burning car parks to the ground! 🚗🔥 I’ve worked for a few OEM’s and seen in-house footage of EV’s being deliberately set on fire, all in the name of testing. What I witnessed, which is intersting, is, if an EV is set on fire, say via the interior, and the whole car burns to a shell, the battery does not catch fire, it remains intact because, it has a solid safety shell, capable of withstanding a crash situation, and has coolant surrounding the modules on most modern EV’s. I need to express here that, this a different scenario to an EV battery being penetrated by a sharp object at high speed. There has been two recent high profile car park fires reported at Lisbon, Portugal (200 cars destroyed) and Luton, UK (1400 cars destroyed), where it’s been proved that an ICE vehicle was the cause. With any ICE vehicles in these car parks, as soon as the flames from the initial ICE car melts their fuel pipes and tank (where plastic), then the fire has access to the fuel and, this just adds ‘fuel to the fire’. On a petrol vehicle, the likely situation is that the fuel tank will explode but, as the plastic tanks melts, and combines with the fuel, it causes a liquid ‘stream’ of fire, resulting in it spreading quicker. Whilst diesel fuel is not as flammable as gasoline, it will still catch on fire under such conditions and will be flammable for a long time because of its flashpoint In a situation such as Luton or Lisbon, where an ICE vehicle causes a fire that engulfs EV’s (as well as other ICE), the ICE will add ‘fuel to the fire’ with their onboard fuel storage but, the chances are that EV batteries won’t catch fire and so therefore, won’t contribute to fire. So the next time someone tells you or posts that EV’s shouldn’t park in carparks, especially basements, incase they cause a fire, just remind them of ‘the two L’s’…Luton and Lisbon! 🚗🔥
