In the ever-evolving landscape of Microsoft, I’ve come to learn the immense value of clear communication and the subtle nuances of unconscious bias. The culture here is robust, a nurturing ground for learning and an opportunity for profound personal transformation. On this day, a personal milestone intertwines with my professional narrative. Twenty-six years ago, my wife and I welcomed our son Zach into the world. His life, though tragically brief as we lost him on the third of May, has been a beacon of inspiration. Zach’s legacy urges me to savor every second, to relish each smile and laugh, and to embrace every chance for joy and connection. Today, I choose to share this intimate part of my story openly, stepping into the vulnerability that Microsoft’s culture has taught me to value. It’s a step towards healing, understanding, and fostering deeper connections within our world wide community as I continue to learn. As we continue to support one another in our individual and collective journeys, let us remember the lessons from the lives that touch us. Zach’s memory is a powerful reminder to make the most of every moment and to approach each day with gratitude and openness. "What are you thinking of doing after this role?". It was three minutes in to my first interview with Microsoft, and the question caught me off guard. Surely the answer is, "I want to do this role first", right? We all know and dread hearing "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" in an interview, but this time it felt different. What followed was both enlightening and harrowing, as the hiring manager took over half the interview to run through his own career development plan, his planned time to move, and which roles were next for him. Afterwards he again asked me: "What comes next?". This formed the foundation for what became my own lived truth: The best time to develop your career is while you’re happy and inspired in your current role. The best time to learn skills for what’s next is while you’re feeling fulfilled. The best person to own your career growth is you. Even today - I catch myself forgetting it. In a world where we're ruled by KPIs and leading indicators, QoQ growth % and RoBs, top line vs bottom line revenue - the day-to-day grind can be all encompassing. But the reality is that our impact is dictated by the most important thing of all: our own growth and development. I’m a constant - and unapologetically loud - voice for the importance of career development. I’ve been lucky over the last 20 years to have peers, managers, mentors, and friends help me on that journey; not by providing me answers but by holding me accountable and giving me a push or perspective where needed. There aren’t many companies in the world where you’re given a platform that not only facilitates career growth, but makes it an obligation fundamental to our mission: "To empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more". After 11 incredible years at Microsoft, the time has come for me to embark on a new journey. It's been an absolute privilege to work alongside so many talented, driven, and inspiring individuals—both at Microsoft and among our valued customers. I’ve learned and grown immensely, not only through my work but through the countless friendships and mentoring relationships I’ve had the honor to develop. There’s a phrase in Chinese: “天下没有不散的筵席,” which translates to, “There are no never-ending banquets in the world.” (I have been waiting to use the phrase for so long 😊) While this chapter has been exciting, rewarding, and filled with experiences I will one day share with my children and grandchildren, it’s time to say goodbye to Microsoft and the wonderful opportunities that I’ve had here. As for what’s next? The future is wide open, and I’m still figuring it out. Those who know me well know that I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit (even if I jokingly call myself a “poor entrepreneur”). For now, I plan to take some time off, enjoy some peaceful moments at my summer house, and maybe dive back into building iOS apps and games purely for fun. Who knows—I might even dabble in YouTube or explore some of my other hobbies in more depth. Or perhaps, a new opportunity will come along that piques my interest. Microsoft and I, it's complicated. When I joined the company in 2008, for people who knew me it was an unexpected move. I was a Linuxer, a PHP developer with little to no love for Windows. But I got offered an opportunity to grow beyond my own horizon. So I accepted, was challenged, fell in love with tech communities (and am until today), got PIP'ed, improved, was promoted, delusioned, then I challenged the status quo, grew into new roles, opened up my mindset, became aware, and an ally, and got used to all that so much that I assumed what we had was the industry standard. I left Microsoft in 2021, and what I took with me was a lot of learnings and high expectations in terms of company culture. I think my teams and what Satya Nadella did to the company somewhat spoiled me for years. 🥰 Three years later, I still come back from time to time for the people (and the coffee). I was blessed to be part of this transformation at Microsoft, and all the priceless experience I was able to make. (I would even dare to claim having contributed a tiny bit to it.) After spending two years at a series D startup, and now still a new joiner to a DAX Konzern, I learned that my expectations are sometimes unfairly high. But being aware of that makes me even more valuable I feel, even if I keep my expectations and standards at this high level. Let's challenge the status quo. Not accept an "above average" as enough. It's all about culture. It is ALL ABOUT CULTURE. Did I ever come to loving Microsoft? Hell no. But I loved what we were enabled and empowered to do to develop that great culture. Things have normalised since then, I've heard. But what I was able to conserve from my time at Microsoft makes me a better version of myself today.
