On Tyranny is a little book with the potential for big impact, especially right now when many of us are looking for action as the antidote to despair in the US. The election results of 2024 were not a mandate for the incoming regime, and we are not powerless to protect our democracy. While the author has provided twenty lessons with historical context, I’ve picked ten (I combined two) that can be translated into action; things we can do now to build the muscle for January 2025 when we are going to be asked to do even more to stand up for what is right, just, and slows down the train wreck we are beginning to witness. What actions are you taking to uphold and protect democracy in the US? https://lnkd.in/gPQmjAD4 #ontyranny #timothysnyder #upholddemocracy #takeaction.

Do You Know About Article V? The Founders of our nation foresaw the need for We the People to have a mechanism to rein in government overreach. Autocrats undermine democracy by creating fear and division, causing individuals and organizations to retreat from challenging power. This weakens democratic institutions and allows autocrats to consolidate control. However, the Annunciation House in Texas provides a powerful example of resistance. Despite legal attacks from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the shelter fought back with support from faith-based groups and the community. A court ruled in their favor, condemning Paxton's actions as politically motivated. This case shows that resisting autocratic tactics can protect democracy. Collective resistance disrupts the cycle of decline and strengthens democratic institutions. #democracy #ifyoucankeepit #civicengagment #autocrats #Texas #govermentoverstepping

New Episode of After America: https://lnkd.in/gmuz_fa4 What if the very institutions designed to protect American democracy are now its greatest threat? In this episode, we scrutinize why Donald Trump remains a formidable candidate nearly four years later, and how key democratic norms and institutions like the rule of law, free and fair elections, and a free press are being systematically eroded. This sets the stage for the 2024 election, framing it as a critical battle between authoritarianism and democracy. We also unpack the structural weaknesses that plague American democracy today, focusing on the Senate, the Electoral College, and the House of Representatives. These institutions, originally designed to balance power, now disproportionately benefit Republicans, leading to governance and policy outcomes that undermine public trust. Partisan gerrymandering and the Senate's counter-majoritarian design are scrutinized for perpetuating poor governance and eroding faith in our democratic systems. We also discuss the role of bureaucracy, technocracy, and neutral institutions in safeguarding democracy. Finally, we delve into the fragility of American democratic norms and the judiciary. Discussing the politicization of judicial appointments and challenges to electoral legitimacy, we explore the consequences for democratic stability. The rise of Christian nationalism, deregulation, and threats to climate initiatives signal troubling trends, especially with the prospect of Donald Trump's return to the presidency. Shawn Fettig is doing a great job highlighting some of the symptoms of democratic backsliding in the U.S., as noted by political scientists, in his series, "After America." Happy to contribute my thoughts where relevant (as in this episode). Take a listen!

The mark of indelible ink on the finger. Some focus on the pain - heat, standing in line, why should we? etc etc. I haven't met anyone in my life yet, who has not had an opinion on how the government needs to function. On how this ministry is not doing its work, or that ministry is operating at sub-par levels. On how politicians that have been elected have turned out to be thieves and focussed on lining their own pockets rather than work for the constituency/state/country. This small line on my finger says that I have taken responsibility - to do something about it. It means that I have availed of my right to choose and have done what I can to contribute towards my constituency/state/country. It doesn't matter what your political ideology is, or who you support, or who you vote for. What matters is that you make it count. If you have voted, Congratulations. If you haven't yet because your constituency votes on one of the remaining 5 days - all the best. Do take out time and go cast your vote. If you haven't because you found some other excuse - you have willingly given up your right to share your opinion on all political matters! Because, every 'right' comes with a 'responsibility!' #psychology #adultfranchise #govote #LokSabha2024

The 2024 election could be the last free election held in a unified America. So warns Robert Kagan in this brilliant and terrifying analysis of the perilous state of democracy in the United States today. If Donald Trump loses the upcoming election, as he did in 2020, but refuses to accept the result, as he also did in the last election, he is likely to call on his millions of followers to repudiate the election results. It will be a short step from there to Republican-dominated states rejecting the legitimacy of the federal government and effectively seceding. The United States at that point will cease to be united, with grave consequences for both Americans and the world. In Rebellion, Kagan dives deeper than the op-eds and think pieces to explore the historical forces that have brought us to this moment—in particular the long history of opposition to liberalism, and to government, that has shaped America’s character from the time of the Revolution to today. Trump’s unique capacity to tap into that tradition of dissent and circumvent the American system has brought us to the edge of dissolution—not for the first time in our history but possibly the last.

1wI follow Snyder on Substack; he offers very worthwhile discussion. I will tell you my answer to your question. I've written it in blog format on my website (linked). In capsule form: we should use the weapons we're most skilled with and can achieve the most, and focus on them. There is much that I could do, but ineffectively. And what I can do effectively may not seem like politics, but it supports the effort. So that's where I'll stay. My writing is my weapon. https://jaynasheats.com/literature-politics-and-gender-affirmation/
