Embarking on the journey of independent filmmaking often feels like navigating uncharted waters. As we dove deep into creating our latest indie project, we were met with a major hurdle: market saturation. With countless films streaming on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime, it became a real challenge to make our voice heard among the noise. Instead of letting this setback discourage us, we banded together as a team to rethink our strategy. By leveraging social media to build a robust online presence and engaging with our audience through storytelling, we managed to carve out our niche in this crowded space. It's incredible how impactful authentic engagement can be! The outcome? We saw a substantial increase in our audience engagement and reach, with more viewers tuning in than we initially thought possible. This experience taught us that flexibility and creativity are paramount in a rapidly changing distribution landscape. So, to all fellow indie creators out there: embrace the obstacles! You’re not just a Filmmaker! After what sounds like a whole lot of fun, filmmakers have to become entrepreneurs in the business of selling. Seeking revenue from ticket sales, home video, foreign sales, merchandise, and OTT platforms like Netflix. They also look to profit from syndication deals and licensing to networks and streaming services. Diversifying income sources is vital, with successful filmmakers using tailored strategies to engage audiences, adapting to trends in an effort to maximize earnings. Additional revenue streams may include renting spaces, selling templates and printables, participating in surveys, merchandise sales, sponsorships, international sales, ancillary rights, and festival prizes. Diversification helps filmmakers navigate industry uncertainties and achieve financial stability. Soon they may have to double as the Uber driver in order to get people in the theater!

https://lnkd.in/eKn5ckFR Netflix, when they began streaming original series in 2013, wanted to be HBO, but HBO was able to stay ad-free because their parent company Time Warner was able to pour money into HBO coming from the W.B. merchandising, box office ticket sales, home video sales and the advertising from their other cable channels like Cartoon Network! 🙂💰👕🎟💿📺 Netflix, on the other hand, was (and probably still is) just a streaming platform, funded by Wall Street! 📈👔 When I think of Disney, I STILL think of animation, no matter how much they'll want to push Marvel, Star Wars, Fox and Nat Geo - in fact, I empathise with the marketing people, who would've found it SO difficult to explain to the public that some of Disney+ is NOT safe/appropriate for kids! 🚸 When I saw the build-up to the launches of Disney+, W.B. Max and Paramount+, I initially saw it all as the ultimate Battle of the Libraries, all aiming to touch our nostalgia hearts, but in the long run, these legacy media giants will just want to make it harder for you to discover classic material as they will constantly PUSH new content (like the old Sky Movies ads - "Enjoy the latest blockbusters!") - which is why I trust organisations like the British Film Institute (BFI)! 🎞 Aiming to make your future movies for the WIDEST possible audiences is like forcing EVERYONE on Earth to like The Beatles, just because more of their albums are on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums (2023) than from anyone else! 🙂🎧🌍 https://lnkd.in/ecKGwyGy #filmhistory #classicIP #filmeducation #animation #marketing #audiencetargeting #brandidentity #streaming

The idea of succeeding in the fastest-growing continent is alluring, but the complex African market is costly and difficult to navigate. Inconsistencies surrounding payment and broadband, as well as curating culturally relevant content lead to high entry barriers for new competitors. So for now, it’s a two-horse race between Showmax and Netflix, with Showmax taking the lead, however briefly. https://lnkd.in/dTcWJCdP

The most terrifying stage experience I've ever seen... AND spectacular Transmedia. On the last night of my around the world trip, I checked out "Stranger Things: The First Shadow" in London and wow. As someone who closely follows immersive/experiential entertainment (#Starcruiser), I was impressed by Netflix's bold venture into live theater. This official canon prequel is a bold move on how major streaming platforms can successfully expand their IP into new mediums. Typically we'd see a company just slap on an experience but Netflix and the producers really put on something epic. 🤖 Seamless integration of modern technology (holograms, LED screens, practical effects). 👿 Strategic narrative development that appeals to both fans and newcomers 🎭 Brilliant execution of immersive storytelling techniques in live theater. They put it all together! I was sitting next to a super fan of ST and he said it felt like an EPIC in your face super sized episode of Stranger Things. A statement I agree with it. I would also add that I think it was much more terrifying and spectacular than a regular ST episode. I caught myself multiple times literally saying "what the f@ck!" in awe with what I was witnessing. So check it out and enjoy the epicness And cause this is LinkedIn... Go and appreciate when a big entertainment company takes a bold swing in expanding their IP. #TransmediaStorytelling #EntertainmentInnovation #Netflix #TheatreTech #BusinessInnovation #StrangerThings
