🎗 Fostering cardio-endometriosis: a call to action for a comprehensive understanding of cardiovascular disease in endometriosis. 👉 Recently, a growing body of evidence has highlighted a concerning link between endometriosis and cardiovascular disease. Endometriosis, a chronic, inflammatory, hormone-dependent condition affecting 5–10% of reproductive-aged women worldwide, has long been associated with reproductive and gynaecological consequences. However, emerging research has suggested that it may also contribute to adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Happy to share our latest work, titled "Aging-associated mechanisms of atrial fibrillation progression and their therapeutic potential", has been published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Aging. This review article was a transatlantic collaboration between Dr Xander Wehrens and fellow co-first author Shuai Zhao at the Baylor College of Medicine and the Reilly group in Oxford. In this review, we discuss the intricate link between atrial fibrillation and advancing age, the disease's major risk factor. We embed discussion of emerging therapeutic opportunities that may be able to sever the links between this immutable risk factor and the accumulation of changes that predispose the heart to atrial fibrillation. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women globally, which is why at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, we recognize the urgent need to address the gaps that exist in cardiovascular research. A recent study published in the European Heart Journal revealed differences in risk factors and biological pathways related to the incidence of myocardial infarction between women and men. Research like this is a stark reminder of the need to ensure parity in recruitment of women in cardiovascular clinical trials, as they are so often underrepresented. These new data not only identify potential targets for preventative and therapeutic interventions in cardiovascular disease, but also highlight that until diverse patient populations are included in clinical trial research, we will not be able to fully address cardiovascular diseases. What can’t Weygovy® do?! A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has revealed that the weight-loss drug Weygovy® can significantly lower the risk of COVID-19 deaths, heart attacks, and strokes in patients with heart disease. The trial, led by Harvard University-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital and funded by Novo Nordisk, the makers of #Weygovy®, was started before the COVID-19 pandemic. It found that people taking Weygovy® were just as likely to get COVID-19, but they had fewer serious illnesses or deaths related to COVID-19. The researchers do not know if the benefit of Weygovy® is due to weight loss or other effects, but suggest that extra weight may be the greatest contributor to lower life expectancy. Can digital twins of the heart provide personalized care for heart disease patients? ❤️🩹 At the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML), they perform a lot of research. In these Science Stories, their researchers explain their work and the tools they use to perform their research for FHML. In the Netherlands, approximately 1.7 million people suffer from cardiovascular diseases. By mapping the pumping function of the heart in detail, researchers hope to better tailor care to the patient in the future. Dr. Nick van Osta researches this by creating digital twins of the heart. In this video, he explains how a digital heart works, how it fills in the missing puzzle pieces in heart disease diagnosis and treatment and how it ultimately could be used to provide personalized care.
