Touchscreens! What’s not to like? Well, quite a bit actually. Steve Jobs once said that touchscreen laptops were an 'ergonomically terrible' idea. But despite his reservations, touchscreens took off and are now commonplace as an interface for many our tech products and devices. Nowhere is this more true than in our cars, where touchscreen controls are increasingly replacing physical buttons. And with good reason: Touchscreens are aesthetically pleasing - they look modern and clean - and, from a manufacturing point of view, they are cheaper to produce. But, Steve Jobs' concern remains valid - often touchscreens aren’t as easy to use. And, in the context of a car driver, a user experience issue can quickly become a safety issue too. This fact hasn’t gone unnoticed by NCAP, the European organisation responsible for crash-testing cars and awarding safety certificates, who last week announced that from January 2025 they will penalise any vehicle that doesn’t feature a physical button or switch for certain functions, like indicators, hazard lights, horn or wipers. While this is unlikely to keep auto manufacturers up at night (unless you’re a car designer, I guess) it does raise questions about how we design and build our technologies so that they are genuinely fit for purpose. Here are some of the main #quirksofMobiledesign to keep in mind: #No Hover States: As you just learned, mobile devices don't support hover interactions (since there's no cursor), so any design element relying on hover effects needs to be rethought for mobile. Tap or swipe interactions often replace hover behaviors. #Limited Screen Space: Mobile screens are much smaller than desktop screens, so designs need to prioritize simplicity, clarity, and a focus on essential content. Minimalism is key—avoid overwhelming users with too much information or complex layouts. #Touch Targets: Buttons and other interactive elements need to be large enough to tap easily with a finger. The average recommended touch target size is 44x44 pixels, according to Apple’s guidelines. Small touch targets lead to frustration and accidental clicks. #Gestures: Mobile devices offer unique gesture-based interactions (like swipe, pinch, or double-tap), which don't exist on desktops. Designing for these gestures enhances the mobile experience but needs to be done thoughtfully, as users may not always expect them. #Different Loading Behavior: Mobile networks can be slower or more unreliable than desktop connections, so performance optimization is critical. Reducing image sizes, optimizing code, and minimizing data usage are important to ensure fast loading times on mobile. #Keyboard Interaction: On mobile, different keyboards appear for different input types (e.g., numbers, email). It’s essential to specify the correct keyboard for each input field (e.g., a numeric keyboard for entering a phone number) to make form completion easier for users. #Thumb Zones: Mobile users often interact with their devices using one hand, which creates a "thumb zone" where some parts of the screen are easier to reach. The bottom center of the screen is generally the most accessible, while the top of the screen can be harder to reach, especially on larger phones. Placing key actions within the thumb zone improves usability. #Orientation Changes: Mobile devices can be used in portrait or landscape mode. Designs need to be responsive, ensuring that elements adapt and maintain functionality and aesthetics regardless of the screen orientation. #Battery and Data Consumption: Mobile users are often more concerned with conserving battery life and minimizing data usage. Heavy animations, large images, and frequent updates can drain battery or data quickly, leading to a poor user experience. #Pop-ups and Modal Dialogs: Pop-ups that work well on desktop can be intrusive or awkward on mobile screens. Since more than half the internet traffic now originates from mobile devices, designing with a mobile-first mindset is no longer optional. Yet many product designers begin by designing desktop-centric products and adapt them later for mobile access. Doing so, they often produce cluttered interfaces and poor user experiences on the smaller screens. Mobile-first design means there is a tendency to foremost try simplicity and usability on the mobile devices rather than an extension of the design to the bigger screens. This forces you to concentrate on what really is important—what features are most important, what content you need to display, and how the users are going to interact with your product using touch. Designing from a mobile first gives you an experience that is streamlined, very user-friendly, and easily scalable to the tablets and desktops. It's time to change your mind: design for the devices your users are on.
