Fa La La La F*! The final sprint toward the EOY is no joke! It’s a hard time of year for so many at work. Santa and I were chatting the other day—T-26 days to EOY, and the pressure? It's REAL REAL! He reminded me of all those years when I was alone in my office (aka my Chicago studio apartment, where my kitchen, bedroom, living room, and dog were all also my office). It felt like the walls were closing in. The Fa La La La FEAR was palpable! Was I going to make it this quarter? What if I don’t? If you’re a leader, I feel you—the presure is ON. But stop the scro-scro-scrolling for a second and think: What does each person on my team need to survive these weeks? Some might thrive on your Don Shula-style pep talks. Others might just need a clear plan, a little encouragement, or—let's be honest—a damn break, a breath, a beat, a pep-talk, some compassion. Let’s sleigh this season together. "Give them what the need, so you can get what you want." And for the love of lit-up lawn reindeer—if you need something from your leader, get Fa La La LA LOUD! Happy Holidays and Happy Friday! “Daddy, did you know, there’s a pizza fairy up there?” “Where?” “On your bedroom roof – there, look!” This is a tale about ‘stories’ you tell. You see, once when my son was very young he saw the reflection on my watch in the sunshine onto the wall. When he asked what the little light was, I told him it was a fairy and how lucky he was to see one. It’s a tale that stuck. Noah still sees lots of fairies in the summer and (depending on where Daddy is sitting) sometimes the fairies dance about him playing. It’s a tale that got retold when Noah spotted a triangular reflection on our bedroom ceiling from my wife’s make-up mirror. Daddy had not seen a pizza fairy before and I was lucky to see one! Some tales are innocent. Some tales are magical. Some tales are not true. Almost all tales stick. Are you are telling yourself that ‘everything is fine’ at work when the real story is not true?
