I think commute has a lot to do with how we view our work. If it’s a huge stressful long production just to get there, then we are investing too much time and energy into it. When we have too much logistics around being able to work: bringing kids to school/daycare, paying for parking, beating traffic then our life becomes oriented around planning instead of living. There is no space for spontaneity, illness that comes with being human, or proper punctuation to our daily activities. We come home and collapse. How do we integrate work into our life in a way that feels seamless and natural? I think the 70% rule used in Tai Chi is applicable here: If we apply a relaxed awareness/ engagement to all of our daily activities-at about 70% of our capacity, rather than the American 110% or 0%, then we are living at a sustainable engagement level. In order to do this I think our life set-up needs to cater to that, applying things like a reasonable commute as an example.
