Glad to be a small part of this. Semiconductors are critical infrastructure and the economic engine for decades to come. If both parties want to prioritise economic growth, a starting point must be to play a larger role in the industry. Look at the importance of ASML to The Netherlands or TSMC to Taiwan. There is no reason that the UK can't lead on emerging technologies like photonic, quantum, or neuromorphic chips. Yesterday the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced the creation of the National Semiconductor Institute.   Members of the UK Chips Coalition, as the industry voice for the #semiconductor sector, have called on UK Government to ensure this announcement turned into action. Through the open letter shared yesterday with the Secretary of State, the Chips Coalition have shared their belief that this Institute should be authoritative, independent, and an empowered body that will bring together wider UK industry as users of semiconductors, alongside the international and domestic semiconductor industry. Specifically, it should have impact across three core areas:   1.      Commitment to next-generation R&D and manufacturing for semiconductors related to DeepTech 2.      Commitment to skills 3.      Commitment to international trade and expansion   You can read the full letter below ⬇   On the announcement of the Institute, techUK’s CEO Julian David has said: “The establishment of a UK Semiconductor Institute is welcomed by techUK and other members of the Chips Coalition, including Global Tech Advocates and TechWorks. The UK Semiconductor Institute is launching to connect industry, academia, and the government. This institute will serve as a 'single point of contact,' bringing in specialist skills, tools, infrastructure, and market readiness support. It aims to advance the UK semiconductor strategy, which promises up to £1bn funding over the next decade. Launching this autumn, the institute aims to unify the sector, focusing on areas where the UK can lead globally, such as advanced materials and innovative semiconductor manufacturing. Industry leaders, including the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's Semiconductor Advisory Panel and trade association techUK, have welcomed this move. 'The institute represents a significant opportunity for building new infrastructure in support of areas where the UK can lead on the global stage,' said David Moore, CEO of Pragmatic. techUK, via the industry group the Chips Coalition, has been working with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to advocate for the creation of a National Semiconductor Institute in the UK. This recommendation originated from the Infrastructure Feasibility Study led by Nicky Athanassopoulou at the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge. Since this, many techUK and Chips Coalition members have called on UK Government to bolster their support for UK Chips with this institute. We strongly welcomed it being announced yesterday on the one year anniversary of the National Semiconductor Strategy. UK Government should leverage the rhetoric of the National Semiconductor Strategy to deliver ambitious support to enable the UK semiconductor industry to thrive. We hope that the creation of this institute allows them to do just that. It is not possible to be a world leader in all aspects of the semiconductor value chain. However, it is critical to transform the National Semiconductor Strategy into action through targeted support for the semiconductor industry, delivering a strong return on investment across the public and private sectors. Achieving the UK’s fullest potential in this technology will require us to support existing leadership in areas such as IP, design and research, while concomitantly developing access to markets, talent, and facilitating growth in manufacturing and supply chains. All of this is  that will be essential to the future of UK chips. It is unbelievable to see the CHIPS Act coming into play in the market. With it being the most significant and symbolic federal investment every made in Chip R&D. The pillar of the CHIPS R&D program is the NSTC, a $5B+ initiative "tasked to conduct research and prototyping of advanced semiconductor technology and grow the domestic semiconductor workforce to strengthen the economic competitiveness and security of the domestic supply chain”. Since the passing of the CHIPS Act, many leading stakeholders have issued several reports detailing recommendations and priorities for the operation of the NSTC. This should form the basis for the CHIPS R&D Office. The SIA's key recommendations include: 1: Industry-Driven Public-Private Partnership 2: Objectives and Focus 3: Operating Structure 4: Participation Structure 5: Policy Considerations "To achieve the important goals of the CHIPS Act—to promote U.S. global leadership and ensure the next generations of transformative technologies are developed domestically—SIA’s recommendations underscore the importance that the CHIPS R&D program be driven by the priorities of the U.S. semiconductor industry and foster effective collaboration across companies, government agencies, institutions of higher education, and other key stakeholders" #semiconductors #CHIPSact #federalinvestment #semiconductormanufacturing

Saqib Bhatti MP MBE and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology what does "independent" in New independent Institute to steer UK semiconductor innovation and support semiconductor strategy actually mean? The press release says "with independence from government, the Institute will promote the voice of industry". Where will the funding come from and who will determine who represents the industry? Will any of the people involved in the new institute have been involved in and benefit from the decision to create it? Will the government set out any guidance for the new institute? "new body will be a single point of contact to promote the sector to investors and attract foreign investment in British research expertise" Is it a single point of contact for government or?? I'm sure the companies and associations promoting themselves and attracting foreign investment will continue doing what they have been doing, but does this mean DSIT and others will no longer be involved, surely not? When will more clarity be provided? It's good to see that earlier that this month the Department for Education (DfE) finally launched its Skills Dashboard (promised in last year's semiconductor strategy) to monitor the supply and demand of science and technology skills for critical technologies: https://lnkd.in/eK2kTHrv Interesting that today's release mentions the skills challenges, but doesn't refer to the skills dashboard. I haven't spent much time looking at the dashboard, but I'm shocked to see that it seems to suggest that growth in semiconductor employment will only be 5% to 2030 and 9% to 2035 and this seems to be a slowing down compared to recent growth... Does this mean that the government intervention is not expected to grow employment in semiconductors?
