Starlink has temporarily suspended new subscriptions in Kenya’s capital Nairobi and surrounding regions, says the suspension is in response to an overload in network capacity driven by increased demand in these areas. “Nairobi and neighbouring areas are currently at network capacity. This means that too many users are trying to access the Starlink service within Nairobi, and there isn’t enough bandwidth to support additional residential or roaming customers now,” Starlink said. Starlink has indicated that it will work on expanding its capacity in the affected regions before resuming new sign-ups. The affected areas include Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Narok, Murang’a and Nakuru regions where Starlink has seen significant uptake since its launch in Kenya in July 2023. Starlink Slashes Prices, what are your thoughts on this? In a bold move to expand its reach and enhance internet accessibility, Starlink has announced a significant price reduction for its installation hardware in Kenya. The company has cut costs by an impressive 55.6%, lowering the price from KSh 89,000 to just KSh 39,500. This special pricing is available until May 15th, offering a substantial window of opportunity for potential users. The Impact on Local Businesses and Education For local businesses, reliable internet is a gateway to new markets and digital tools that can streamline operations and reduce costs. Similarly, educational institutions stand to benefit enormously. Students in areas previously cut off from consistent internet services could now access a wealth of online learning resources, opening up new avenues for education and professional development. What This Means for Kenya The implications of improved internet connectivity in Kenya are profound. Enhanced access can lead to increased employment opportunities, improved health outcomes through better information flow, and a more informed citizenry. As internet access becomes increasingly equated with access to opportunities, initiatives like this play a crucial role in leveling the playing field for all Kenyans. For those interested in taking advantage of this offer, acting swiftly before the May 15th deadline is advisable. This is an opportunity to be part of a new era of digital empowerment in Kenya. #StarlinkKenya #DigitalDivide #TechInAfrica #InternetAccess #Connectivity #Innovation #TechnologyForChange #EconomicDevelopment #RuralConnectivity #DigitalTransformation

Satellite internet provider STARLINK is set to make its services more accessible in Kenya by introducing a monthly rental option for its hardware kits. Customers will now be able to rent the kits for a monthly fee of KSh 1,950, in addition to a one-time activation fee of KSh 2,700. This move aims to address the previous barrier of high upfront costs, which limited access to Starlink’s services. Subscribers will also pay KSh 1,300 per month for service plans, without being constrained by a fixed term. This new pricing structure is designed to provide more affordable and flexible internet solutions, addressing the challenge posed by the high initial cost of the hardware kit, which was previously priced at KSh 89,000. Starlink’s entry into the Kenyan market faced challenges due to the steep cost of its equipment, though the company had attempted to reduce prices through limited-time offers. Despite a recent offer lowering the kit price to KSh 45,500, the cost remained prohibitive for many potential users. The introduction of a rental option is expected to broaden Starlink’s customer base and position it as a competitive alternative to traditional internet providers. This move comes at a time when reliable internet access is increasingly crucial, especially in light of recent disruptions caused by damaged undersea cables. #Starlink #Kenya #InternetAccess #SatelliteInternet #TechInnovation #ElonMusk #DigitalDivide #AffordableInternet #Connectivity To read more: https://zurl.co/UXzh

Starlink is one of the amazing inventions (in terms of connectivity)I have seen. it's a good product. Although I have the hugest concern, this is in regards to National Security and privacy. It's easier to sue big Telcos in Kenya In case of a data privacy issue. My biggest concern is who is responsible in case of such a case while using Starlink. As a country we need to rethink the whole service and product i.e. starlink and the worst case scenarios. Anywho, Kevin Otiende I'm for those pictures once mounted. PS: Not related to the post below, just raising a general question.
Speaking as a businessman, internet in Kenya while being one of the best in Africa, can be frustrating because of cost. Just about four months ago we did ask our service provider to upgrade us to a bigger package. It took them two months to upgrade us because the team doing the actual upgrade didn’t see the email. However, the sales team immediately started billing us for the upgraded package. After months of emailing (I am tempted to believe it was a bot responding to us), they finally completed the upgrade but still tried to charge us for the period it wasn’t completed and for the down time. Anyway what I’m saying is, last week I asked my IT guy to procure Starlink. If it’s cheap, if it’s fast, if it’s more MBPS, I’m gonna mount it on top of my car!! Starlink better add silicon glue to this package! 📦

It will be interesting to compare those numbers come next year, once new players light up more capacity. the likes of #2Africa submarine cables and #starlink will definitely change the trends. #CommunicationsAuthority #Connectivity #Kenya #Colocation #InternetGrowth
According to the Communications Authority of Kenya, the country's international internet bandwidth capacity experienced a slight increase by the end of June 2024. SEACOM LTD expanded capacity to meet growing customer demand, and the utilization of undersea bandwidth saw a notable rise, with the majority used within the country and a portion sold externally. Satellite internet capacity also saw a significant jump, primarily due to the launch of Starlink services. The answer is simple. YES!! STARLINK is the best internet solution so far, recently TNM (Telekom Networks Malawi) and Airtel Malawi have both systematically raised their cost of internet bundles, pushing us back to data-must-fall ages except this time we care too little because we have alternative. whether its cost of doing business in Malawi, exorbitant taxes in Malawi or just corporate greed but Malawians have suffered for far too long in hands of these ISPs. The only challenge for Starlink uptake has been initial cost of hardware device but as more people invest in the devices, local ISPs will be forced to re-evaluate their pricing. Starlink could be a game-changer for affordable internet in Africa! #StarlinkAfrica #InternetForEveryone Source: Business Insider Africa

Starlink Satellite Portable & Affordable Internet Demand in PNG. 📡🛰 📱💻👨💻👩💻 The demand for affordable and reliable internet services in Papua New Guinea is growing rapidly, as consumers face high data costs and limited connectivity. Starlink satellite internet, known for its high-speed and low-latency services, could greatly benefit individuals and businesses in the country by providing an alternative solution. It is understood that a court injunction is currently in place regarding the licensing of Starlink operations in PNG. However, there is strong anticipation that this matter will be resolved soon, allowing the service to become accessible to the public. We urge the relevant authorities to provide clarity on the status of this issue and update the public on the expected timeline for Starlink’s entry into the market. This transparency will help consumers and businesses plan accordingly and prepare for the potential benefits this technology could bring to our economy and digital landscape. #papuanewguinea #internet #business #smes #individual #starlinkconcerned #consumers #demand #needs
