Are you still waiting if the #Metaverse will come to life and how it will appear? A few days ago I have reported some Metaverse related updates from Saudi Arabia. Today I would like to report a few updates from Japan. The first update is coming from the city of Kochi, which - a few days ago - has announced its partnership with Start Lands, a Philippines-based metaverse platform developer, to create a virtual replica of the city itself by the summer of this year, that is within a few months. By creating the city’s virtual replica, Kochi aims to attract tourists from around the world and provide them an interactive experience that showcases the city's unique culture and products. The virtual city will also serve as a platform for promoting regional revitalization. As we move further into 2024, Kochi's virtual city is set to become a shining example of how digital/virtual technology can transform people’s real lives and revitalize local communities. The second update is coming from the Japanese Ministry of Education which plans to utilize VR-tech in a program to make it easier for foreign students to stay working in Japan after graduating. The Ministry will provide support by holding job fairs and employment seminars in a virtual environment that facilitates easy connection with potential employers. According to the Ministry, there are cases in which foreign students have expressed interest in finding work in Japan, but because they do not understand the job hunting system or how to research employers, they give up and return to their home countries. The government - on the other side - has set a target employment rate of 60% for foreign students in Japan by the end of 2033. The rate rose steadily from 31.9% in fiscal 2013 to 48.0% in fiscal 2018, but has since leveled off, and was 46.5% in the latest available statistics from fiscal 2021. To achieve the target, the Japanese Ministry plans to make use of a portal site that had been developed for sharing lecture videos between universities, and set up virtual-venues for job fairs and employment seminars. The students will be able to control their personal avatar through their smartphones and make the rounds of the company booths, where they will hear pitches from the avatars representing companies. This project comes a few days after the announcement of the creation of a fully virtual high school whose diplomas will be accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education (see below). It will be VR-accessible and students will attend classes with theirs avatars. By the way, this is not the first appearance of a Japanese school into a virtual environment to provide classes to students, since already in 2022 the return of students of the University of Tokyo happened on virtual benches. We have joined a £6.75m programme to boost creative technology innovation in the West Midlands! We're pleased to be collaborating with Birmingham City University, University of Birmingham, University of Warwick, and the Royal Shakespeare Company on CreaTech Frontiers - a five-year programme funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) on behalf of UK Research and Innovation. This programme will position the region as a global leader in creative technologies, supporting local businesses, driving innovation and addressing regional challenges such as skills gaps and underinvestment in the sector. CreaTech Frontiers brings together expertise across high-demand areas such as artificial intelligence, immersive technologies, digital arts, live performance and gaming. The programme’s foundation includes four specialist research and development labs, including our Virtual Production Lab and aims to provide a support system for creative technology businesses across the region. £1.8 million in funding will be distributed to regional SMEs, alongside business support, 70 paid internships and 16 fully funded PhD placements. With support from collaborators such as Vodafone, Arup, Rebellion and the Birmingham Opera Company, the programme hopes to grow local talent and drive sustained growth in the creative industries. It’s a game-changer—turning career exploration into something interactive, inclusive, and practical while keeping a finger on the pulse of student interest through data analytics. The tools we’ve relied on for decades have served us well, but today’s students need more to thrive in an ever-changing world. To truly prepare them for their futures, we have an opportunity to provide experiences that inspire confidence, spark curiosity, and help them realize their full potential. Have you ever been afraid of making the wrong decision? It’s not uncommon for someone to fear making a poor decision. After all, ever since we were little, we learned how to maneuver through life and that poor decisions resulted in unfortunate circumstances. Don't get me wrong, some decisions carry more weight than others. Consequences could be circumstantially greater in some situations and less in others. One of these situations that makes a twinge go down our spine is answering the question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” The decisions we make in middle and high school start a ripple effect that directly impacts our future. Choosing between college prep, focused, general, or career and technical education (#CTE) classes can result in distinctly different life paths. This decision impacts your high school academic choices, whether or not you pursue a degree, whether you take a year off and travel, join the workforce, join the military, get a certification, or become an apprentice. Then it impacts how you earn a salary, where you’re going to live, how you’re going to eat, and the kind of fun you can have. This is a monumental decision for a student, let alone a young adult trying to course-correct if they got the decision wrong to begin with. There may even be a twinkle of fear for our educators during this process because of the sheer number of students they’re helping prepare for their future. As important as it is for the student to make this decision, it’s just as important for our educators to have the tools to help inform students of as many viable academic and career pathways as possible. There’s no better way to know for sure whether you like something or not than to try it. Virtual reality (#VR) career exploration can help students during this important decision-making process. In VR, you can try careers with virtually hands-on experiences to help make an informed decision and lessen the possibility of negative consequences such as misplaced student debt or choosing an incorrect path.
