What could be more important than protecting children? Yesterday, Microsoft had the honor of hosting a Inclusive Tech Coalition briefing, focused on tackling the impact of generative AI on online child sexual exploitation and abuse.    Generative AI holds incredible potential, but without the right safeguards, it can be misused to exploit children’s vulnerability. The EU’s AI Act and Digital Services Act has already come a long way in setting up the legal frameworks to address these systemic risks.  We’ve made progress as an industry, but there’s still a lot to do.     It was also a valuable opportunity to listen to external stakeholders, understand their perspectives, and to identify how we will continue to collaborate. When we work together, we can make a real difference.

It finally happened: Struggling with the reality of Vice President Harris's large and energetic crowds, Donald Trump falsely claimed, with no evidence, that the audience at a Harris rally was in fact artificial intelligence. In an election season full of shocking twists and turns, this was among the most predictable developments. The claim felt almost inevitable. How did we get here? I offer an explanation of how we arrived in an environment where a prominent figure can make such a claim with impunity: entrenchment, distrust, our increasingly networked lives, and the decisions of some tech companies to broadly slash their trust and safety operations. Enter Trump's false "AI" post––the first of what we can expect to be many such lies.
