Winning investment takes more than doing effective user research. I work on both the practitioner and sales sides, helping product and design teams improve their work using UX metrics. Many teams try to connect with users and influence stakeholders to invest more, but it’s often a losing effort. Most efforts to engage users are underfunded. Many teams don’t know how to secure the resources and funding they need to be more effective. Politics, favoritism, and power dynamics all play a role in gaining funds. But in the end, it comes down to whether the activities generate value, as most decisions hinge on the return on investment. Here are ways to think about the work and how they influence continued support. 💰 Win Investment → Present decisions Present decisions that are based on user research and critical data. Designers should clearly show how design solutions solve user problems and align with business goals. → Use UX metrics Use UX metrics and research data from tools like Helio to show the potential outcomes of design choices and demonstrate their value to the business. → Show financial impact Prove that the recommended design choices serve users and generate financial value to gain stakeholder approval. → Provide executive summaries Share concise, high-impact summaries of research findings to help executives make informed investment decisions. 👂 Influence Resources → Convert research into action Turn research findings into clear takeaways that guide spending. Identify where more time, budget, or team support can lead to significant improvements. → Make clear recommendations Provide clear and actionable recommendations on design changes or next steps. Tailor these suggestions to both user needs and business goals. → Engage stakeholders Hold workshops or collaborative sessions to present findings and align with stakeholders on the necessary resources. → Create prototypes Build prototypes to show the impact of your recommendations and demonstrate how resources will be used effectively. 🍪 Take What You Get Spending too much time gathering user feedback, behaviors, and trends without acting on them will limit your ability to create real impact. This work is important and helps build a foundation for future investment, but it won’t be enough to secure additional resources. → Explore research methods Use mixed methods, like surveys, interviews, or usability tests, to gather user insights. → Develop ideas from insights Use early insights to create design iterations or new concepts that can be refined into full recommendations later. #productdesign #productdiscovery #userresearch #uxresearch

"On previous teams I’ve been a part of, each research discipline (e.g. UXR and Market Research) reported to different parts of the business, Design and Marketing respectively. It was much more difficult to align research roadmaps and outcomes we wanted to influence. This left cross-functional partners to sort through data and do their own triangulation or for each type of researcher to compete for mindshare of their partners to have an impact." Really enjoyed this interview with CashApp's Elysa Stein and dscout's Julie Marie Norvaisas about how UXR teams can find more cross-team alignment with shared business outcomes without ignoring the user experience. So much more here too, but would stood out for me: how being a strong, authentic storyteller who understands how to infuse business metrics in UXR is a win-win for everyone. At Territory, Inc., we know this to be absolute gold. That's why people hire us. Thanks Julie and Elysa (and hi to you both too!) #uxr #uxrleadership #uxrbestpractices #uxrstorytelling #businessimpact #businessmetrics #businessconsulting https://lnkd.in/gRaPQqGX

User Research Myths that Companies & Product Leaders in those companies hold because of which they miserably fail: 1. User Research is Expensive and Time Consuming. 2. User Research is Only For Designers. 3. User Research is One Time Activity. 4. User research is Optional. Good To Have But Not Necessary. 5. User Research Slows Down Development. 7. User Research is All About Asking Users What They Want 8. User Research is Based on Opinions. 9. User Research is Easy, and Anyone Can Do It. 10. User Research ROI Can’t Be Measured . 11. User Research isn’t That Important. 12. You need to choose between Quantitative and Qualitative Research. 13. User Research Provides Stunning, New Revelations. 14. Don’t listen to users because they don't know what they need. 15. User Research Is Usability Testing 16. If my team, friends and family find the product useful, the users will too. 17. A/B testing will take care of it, let’s not put time in research before development. 18. Doing a survey with 5000 users is so much more valuable than interviewing 10 users. 19. User Research is Only For New Products or Features. 20. Logic can be substituted for User Research. I am super convinced that "User research has never been more critical for businesses than it is today in this ever-changing world". You can only make better products or design better experiences when you know your users better. Please comment any other myths you know & I have missed :) Yo, Let's build a better product💜 Tirth #userresearch #uxresearch #productresearch
