The true success of hosting major sporting events extends far beyond immediate economic results. Strategic benefits, such as enhancing national brand equity, boosting tourism, and reinforcing soft power on the global stage, often become lasting legacies. Consider Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. With an investment ranging between $220 billion and $300 billion in infrastructure and preparations, Qatar's commitment was not just about creating world-class sports facilities but also about positioning itself as a modern, innovative nation. The country leveraged the World Cup to showcase its culture and improve its geopolitical standing in line with its Qatar National Vision 2030. Notably, just two months after the event, Qatar experienced a 406% surge in international visitors compared to the previous year, reflecting the enduring appeal of a well-executed global event. Similarly, China invested over $40 billion in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including infrastructure improvements. The iconic ‘Bird’s Nest’ stadium, designed under the artistic direction of Ai Weiwei, became a lasting symbol of modern China and its aspirations on the world stage. However, it's important to recognize the substantial financial commitment required to host such events. Not many cities can afford such an investment, which often means that those that do already possess a certain level of brand prestige. Additionally, unsuccessful games can leave behind legacies of seldom- or never-used structures that occupy valuable land and are expensive to maintain. For example, in Sydney, Australia, it now costs $30 million a year just to operate the 90,000-seat Olympic stadium. So, is hosting worth it? The answer is complex and varies by situation. While the benefits in national branding, tourism, and soft power can be substantial, they often come at a high cost that requires careful planning to ensure lasting value. The organizing team for this 14th national workshop is working hard to finalize the agenda and share it publicly soon. Having a session outlining all the information sharing and interoperability related issues surrounding these massive World Cup events in 2026 will be outstanding for everyone attending the workshop. Session Title 2026 FIFA World Cup Information Sharing: Challenges and Opportunities Abound Description   With the exciting news that 16 cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States will host FIFA World Cup games in 2026, the planning began almost immediately. Both Canadian host cities, Vancouver and Toronto, are accustomed to planning and managing major events. However, needing to coordinate this planning between both cities and their US and Mexican counterparts makes these events unique. For example, the US Government’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has already conducted several planning workshops to discuss preparations and planning efforts associated with this type of special event. Host cities came together to discuss the need for information sharing and emergency communications collaboration among federal, state, and local public safety partners, and identify best practices and lessons learned from planning and execution efforts related to previous large-scale special events. This session, featuring leaders from Vancouver, Toronto and CISA, will provide attendees with a detailed understanding of the challenges and opportunities event planners manage and hope to leverage in the world’s largest sporting event. These issues not only disrupt the event but also lead to potential financial repercussions, such as chargebacks, which can strain the relationship between fans, event organizers, and merchants. However, the World Cup involves more extensive planning and coordination among various cities and venues. The U.S. has experience hosting large international events successfully, such as the 1994 World Cup, which was well-regarded for its organization and security. To ensure readiness for the World Cup, it’s crucial to: 1. Improve Security Measures: Implement stricter security protocols and crowd control measures. 2. Better Planning and Coordination: Learn from past mistakes and enhance coordination among all stakeholders, including local authorities, event organizers, and security personnel. 3. Enhanced Ticketing Systems: Use advanced technology to prevent ticket fraud and manage entry effectively. 4. Infrastructure Investments: Ensure that stadiums and surrounding infrastructure can handle large crowds safely and efficiently. If these steps are taken seriously, the U.S. can address the shortcomings observed in Miami and successfully host the World Cup.
