Powerful inequities exist in obtaining financing for affordable housing and community development projects and investments. Unfortunately, low-income individuals suffer the most disadvantage from the disparities. But all is not lost. The government launched an affordable housing development program — the low-income tax credit that will influence community development. The program is one of the nation’s primary tools in the effort to construct affordable housing for low and middle-income households. Constructing more affordable housing will lower housing instability and economic inequality. But how will communities develop from tax credit projects initiated by the government? I have had the privilege to work in local government for almost 25 years. Having changed roles recently and moving to a London borough I have been reflecting on why local government matters more than ever. When we think about what makes a community thrive, local government plays a central role. It’s not just about policies and programs—it’s about building strong foundations for people to live, work, and grow together. Local government touches nearly every part of our daily lives from clean and safe streets, parks, libraries, and public spaces where neighbours connect, supporting small businesses and local economies, providing services like public transportation, and affordable housing. But beyond the services, local government fosters a sense of belonging. Whether it’s by organising community events, creating opportunities for public input, or responding to residents’ needs, it’s about showing that every voice matters. I’ve seen firsthand how these efforts bring people together, solve problems, and create lasting impact. It’s a reminder that when local government works well, communities can truly flourish. To all the local government leaders, officers, and community advocates out there—thank you for everything you do. Your work doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves, but it truly makes a difference. Let’s keep finding ways to support and uplift each other, because stronger communities start with us.

Although this proposal is intriguing, it largely emphasizes car-centric urban development. Despite Langley's charming open spaces and tight-knit communities, the future plans seem to overlook the importance of fostering interactive neighborhoods. Moreover, current traffic congestion is already overwhelming, and it's unclear how the city intends to manage this issue while increasing density.
TOWNSHIP OF LANGLEY DEVELOPMENT NEWS At the November 18th council meeting, mayor and council endorsed the vision for the new 200 Street 2040 Corridor Plan and instructed staff to use it to update the broader Willoughby Community Plan in 2025.
