DESIGN INSPIRATION: The Birth of a Design Concept
Design inspiration for a designer starts with a call from a potential client. After conducting a discovery call and a formal consultation, as a designer, I create an initial concept for the client. This initial concept is commonly known as a "mood board". A mood board is an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc. intended to evoke or project a particular style or concept. This mood board represents an intentional and creative balance between the client's wants and needs and what the space calls for. I am an intuitive designer who balances the creative aspect of design with the fundamental mechanics of design.
In this example of an actual active mood board, "Lady's Lounge of Leisure", the client has requested a moody lounge to relax and unwind or entertain her closest girlfriends with glasses of a Dominus Cabernet Sauvignon and a charcuterie board of fine cheeses, while enjoying the melodious sounds of, jazz singer, Samara Joy. This type of intimate detail from clients helps create their dream spaces. In addition, the client has a proclivity toward exclusive luxury, bold prints, saturated colors and quiet formality.
The following mood board addresses these aspects of the client's requests in the following ways:
• Exclusive Luxury - the primary seating in this concept features a sofa that is a part of a limited edition and is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity, at purchase. The custom commissioned chandelier is another way to introduce exclusive luxury.
• Bold Prints & Saturated Colors - the wallcovering is a bold oversized print with saturated jewel tone colors and produced in the U.K.
• Quiet Formality - is presented in the black accents in varying pieces of furniture proposed for the project such as, the black lamp shade, black cabinet, black hair-on-hide bench, and the black granite topped side tables.
So, as I await the client's response to this initial mood board we will hope that I have captured the essence and visual manifestation of her vision for the space.
