ENVIRONMENT - Tackle black carbon, fight climate change. Nepal’s glaciers, which are crucial to the survival of millions across South Asia, are melting at an alarming rate—and black carbon, a pollutant 1,500 times more potent than CO2, is to blame. Sandwiched between two of the largest black carbon emitters, India and China, Nepal faces severe consequences if immediate action isn’t taken. But there’s hope. In this episode of The Sustainable Finance Podcast, Paul Ellis talks with Tim Gocher OBE DL, CEO of Dolma Impact Fund, about how renewable energy investments could be the key to reversing this damage and securing a sustainable future for the region. Watch the full interview to learn how renewable energy could reverse the damage. https://lnkd.in/ejYCXb4j #equities #impactinvesting #sustainableinvesting #socialinvesting #renewableenergy #globalwarming #climateaction #blackcarbon #cleanenergy #ESG #climatechange #carbonemissions #greenenergy #responsibleinvesting #environmentalimpact #decarbonization #hydropower #solarenergy #sustainability #environment #thoughleaders #investingstrategies

Cowboys at the Frontier Carbon Cowboys is the latest in a series of articles from The Guardian on the world of carbon credits (link in the comments section) while Carbon Frontiers is a new podcast series by SmarterMarkets™. In the podcast, David Greely sits down with Sandeep Roy Choudhury to discuss the impact of intense media criticism last year on carbon emissions projects and Sandeep’s work in the carbon mitigation and adaptation space. It’s a dense conversation and definitely worth listening. Finally, feels like the VCM industry is stepping up efforts to counter the adverse narrative. As for the article, it’s a slam-dunk yet again. Packed with infuriating details and a North-South lens, the piece delivers a punch one cannot duck. Narratives that borrow latest learnings from communication scientists and behavioural economists work well with clear skies and a gentle tailwind. But overcast conditions and choppy winds can force even the best in the trade to think twice before taking off and the VCM industry is far from the best in the trade. Almost every VCM event and conversation since The Guardian published the first article makes a reference to that project/article thus creating perfect conditions for a negative narrative loop. Instead of this “elephant in the room” approach which is nothing short of a quicksand that is tough to escape, the industry and its players should realise that the solution to the lack of financing is not absence of integrity rather lack of buyer interest. In the world of business, words like trust, transparency, and integrity are used to not only create an imagery of a sanitised environment but also erect imaginary boundaries. For now, the VCM industry seems to be ring fenced to fight each other than the climate crisis. Unless the industry participants, irrespective of the kind of solutions they propose, decide to come together and tackle this narrative, the frontiers will shift and the climate warriors may soon meet the fate of the legendary cowboys. Now, that would add to our climate woes. #VerifiedNotVoluntary #carbonwire

💭 “With more capital than ever flowing into sustainable investing, why is the world still failing to achieve each and every one of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development goals?” Generation Founding Partner, Colin le Duc, addressed the gap in climate finance during an episode of The Thinking Ahead Institute’s Investing for Tomorrow podcast: “Transition is hard, but collectively moving past incremental solutionism to aggregate climate risk is a crucial first step.” Here are three key takeaways from the podcast: 🌱 There is no net zero without nature. Nature is central to the climate debate as the climate risk accelerates. 📈 We are 10 years on from the Paris Agreement in 2015, and at record global emissions. These stark realities present an innovation challenge to finance. ⚡Climate-led investing is being led by science, in recognition that some of the highest emitting, most off track sectors and geographies are currently receiving a very small percentage of allocated climate finance. On June 10, 2024 I did a webinar with my good friend Milla Craig of Millani titled "Can and should the financial sector lead the energy transition? - A Conversation with Robert Eccles & Milla Craig." This came about because she read my article "Untangling Climate Risk, Financial Risk, and Climate Impact" which I published on my column on Forbes.com. https://lnkd.in/ewrZta5Y While the financial sector obviously has an important role to play in providing funding for the energy transition, it can't get ahead of the real economy. As some are thinking it can. These efforts, while well-intended I'm sure, are more part of the problem than part of the solution to achieving a net-zero world by 2050. Milla and I discuss the many different aspects of this. And for those of you wondering about the background in my video, it is my 550 pound tire 🛞 , on top of which is my 10 pound sledgehammer 🔨. I need to update this photo because my tire is now on a lovely astroturf tire-flipping track behind my house. There are various routines I do, but for now just let me say that my PR for 10 tire flips in a row is 87 seconds 🐥 . LIke nine seconds per flip.
