Indie drinks brands have several tactical advantages over the big players. I know a lot is made of the financial firepower of the world's biggest brands and the suffocating presence they have on major retail and hospitality shelves. Issues such as cash flow, competition, distribution and a lack of awareness make the drinks industry one of the hardest to win in. But having given it a bit of thought, I do think independent brands have plenty of advantages the big players just don’t have. Here’s my list - let me know if there's anything to add - genuinely interested in this: ▶️ THEY CAN PIVOT AT SPEED – big brands just can’t do this. Most strategy adjustments bounce around the corporate office for months or years. Big brands are inherently slow. Independents must use this to their advantage. Being agile is so powerful. ▶️ PRODUCT INNOVATION – big brands often take up to two years developing brand extensions or new products with endless focus groups and market testing. Independent brands don’t have that burden. Rather than wading through the red tape factory at corporate brands, they can move quickly and bring products to market rapidly. This means they can actually capitalise on the data and trends they were created for. ▶️ CREATIVITY – probably an unpopular opinion but having zilch marketing budget can actually be really beneficial. It forces creative thinking. I have seen several incredible activations this year that have been done on small budgets (shout out to Mixtons , Botivo Drinks | B corp and Pimentae Drinks who nail experience led activation). When you have no choice you have to get creative– this is a superpower for independent brands. ▶️ PASSION – founder led brands ooze with passion. Believe me, bartenders love brands that solve a problem and have a passionate team behind them. Conversely, the major players just won’t have that authenticity and passion or at least can’t communicate it like founder led brands can. This is infectious and really makes a difference. People buy from people. ▶️ BEING IN TOUCH – culture, trends and relationships play a huge role in the drinks industry. Big brands spend gazillions on data and agency research to try to be culturally relevant. Independent brands are out on the streets seeing these cultural shifts in real time, speaking to their customers face to face and getting a feel for how the market is moving on a daily basis. This is a MASSIVE advantage. Independents are way ahead of the game in this sense. It’s a tough market for sure but independents must lean into their the tactical advantages they have over the big players to really thrive. Anything to add? Found this article dating back to 2019 and found it still relevant today but slightly dated. Prior to 2019 and during the pandemic we saw this premiumization word popping up everywhere. And brands caught this trend by providing innovative drinking experience focused on being new, unique and diverse whether it be in the liquid or the marketing. Today this premiumization concept still remains but I feel consumer preferences are shifting to more of an experience centered around authenticity and rather skipping over brands primarily focused on providing a unique experience. This is not to say a product should be absence of distinction but used rather as a tool to drive authenticity. Consumers are not reaching anymore for 10 different unique experiences but 1 or 2 authentic ones. This then raises the question on how exactly do consumers see authenticity and what does that mean for innovation. For me it is a very fine line but definitely possible to reach. One way brands can do this is providing transparency and provenance in the liquid and the storytelling. A few brands that come to mind are Botanist and Hampden in their production processes, Black Tot in their blending, and Alabat in their storytelling in both the brand and the distiller.
