Key Takeaways from the Latest USDA Hop Report 🌱 Read the full blog: https://bit.ly/4bIuHSg Key Points: - As we look ahead to the upcoming crop, optimism remains, but it is tempered by an awareness of the increasing challenges being faced throughout the supply chain, from grower to brewer. Rising costs and complexities, many beyond our control, add to the difficulties. With a multigenerational perspective, growers understand that these challenges must not paralyze us. - In 2024, Yakima Chief plans to bring in the smallest crop since 2017. This refocused volume is pointed towards our historically highest quality fields. We will continue to align our supply by variety with customer demand. - The Pacific Northwest has seen significant reductions in acreage in all three states, most significantly in the flavor-forward aroma category. The traditional aroma category has also experienced reductions, albeit to a lesser extent. - Alpha acreage has been the least affected, in the case of certain varieties, even slightly increased. - Our goal is to increase field efficiency year over year by prioritizing agronomic sustainability through improving disease and pest resistance. Now, more than ever, brewers should prioritize where they source their hops. In the last six months, we have seen families lose their farms. We have seen other farms acquire farms, and we will see more hop farms cease to exist before the concerted efforts of growers and brewers can stabilize our symbiotic industries. Purchasing hops directly from growers ensures the best returns. While we recognize the occasional necessity for painful adjustments, we urge everyone involved, from farm to taproom, to stick together, enhance resilience, refine our practices, and emerge stronger for the future. (USA 10.04.24) #cherries California Gears Up for its 2024 Cherry Season [AG: Agronometrics Australia?] California's 2024 cherry season anticipates improved conditions after challenges in 2023, with a return to normal harvest timing and optimistic expectations for moderate volume and variety. ----- [AG: Why doesn't Australia have its own version of "Agronometrics," offering freely, timely and pertinent information on our fresh produce industry? Despite Australia's reputation for technological adoption and the presence of numerous taxpayer-funded industry representatives, our industry lacks collaborative national communication and transparent, up-to-date information. This gap leaves farmers, growers and consumers vulnerable, relying on non-existent or outdated data, hindering progress. Daily sales data collected verbally from wholesale market traders are scarce, unreliable, or inaccessible, often requiring paid subscriptions for data lacking detail or accuracy. Technology enabling real-time recording and reporting of sales data is deliberately withheld by post-farm gate operators, who aim to control market decisions. In contrast to other countries, Australia lacks a unified national effort to provide freely available and up-to-date data on fresh produce production and wholesale market data to farmers and growers. This absence of timely market analysis concerns industry representatives who fail to provide adequate solutions or inform their constituents effectively. There is an urgent need for a collaborative national platform to promote transparency and provide current production and market data, empowering farmers and growers with accurate domestic market information crucial for industry sustainability. This platform would equip them with the tools needed for long-term profitability and existence. The failure to champion such initiatives raises questions about advocacy for the empowerment of Australian farmers and growers.] ----- https://lnkd.in/gjSwZuUj

California's processing tomato industry has been through a wild couple of years. With post-pandemic demand normalization now on the horizon, according to our specialty crop analyst, Matt Woolf, how will that affect growers' break-even yield in 2024? Matt shared his forecast and other key insights this month at a roundtable event hosted by American AgCredit and Terrain. According to Matt, the pandemic juiced demand during a time of restricted supply, leading to the highest price for processing tomatoes the industry had seen. However, he expects demand conditions to start normalizing now given: ◾ A more structural decline in per capita demand ◾ Challenges of competing in the export market One sign of demand softening is the recently announced grower price per conventional ton of $112.50, down from last year’s $138. Though the break-even yield can differ widely by operation, Matt's analysis using UC Davis cost studies and California Tomato Growers Association prices suggests the average break-even yield in 2024 is approximately 27% higher than it was last year. Although the price has fallen from last year, Matt states that it is still the second highest on record, meaning 2024 could be a very good year for tomato growers. 📣 Stay tuned for more from Matt on processing tomatoes. #CaliforniaAgriculture #Tomatoes
