So What do you exactly do Sameer? What do you bring to the company or its founder to help them succeed? These were no more sarcastic questions unlike 5-7 years ago. When he me asked this question and my initial thought was, “is he being sarcastic again?” But then he started sharing his life journey with me and became somewhat vulnerable. This was the first time he was being like this! I thought to myself - “What the hell…. Let me not be a sceptic and consider his question on the face value.” And I decided to respond. Me: Where are you working nowadays? Him: xyz company. Heading abc division and its a smaller company than the earlier one. I am getting to tackle more challenges and it is more satisfying. Me: How was it with earlier company? It is The Top most name in your industry and you were the Top man there! Him: Well it was nice but not so nice. I had followed a typical playbook of going through IIT - IIM - Consulting company - Investment Company - etc. etc. Me: So what was wrong with it? Him: I know most people would kill for the kind of life I have lived, but I haven’t been Happy! Me: Why? You’ve made money. You are reasonably famous. People and management kids look upto you. You have had pretty much everything you wanted and anyone you wanted too. (I said laughingly). You’re fit. Achieved your Goals. Opposite gender finds you attractive enough. You travel well and in style. (I continued…). What’s not to be Happy about? Him: Well. This anyone could have, all of this. But I could never do what I really wanted. Me: But didn’t you start your own venture sometime back? Him: Yes I did, but that did not fare as well and I had to exit. Me and my co-founder had our share of differences. Me: What kind of difference? Him: He and I wanted different things from Life. His thoughts and mine were different. (He had clearly not picked up the clue till now. Clearly he was grieving.) Me: Are you able to live a better life in the current job? Him: Sameer… you are carrying on well with life and hence asking such questions. Corporates are a different animal. Here we don’t get to live a Life. It is all a pretence. We can’t be vulnerable and our guards are up at all times. It’s easy for you since you’ve been running your own companny for 25+ years. (He went on and on and on…….) Me: Well, this is exactly what we bring to a founder or a company. We help them see clearly and become authentic. They realise What and Why they Desire. Followed by How to Live in order to fulfl those desires. In short - we give them the Power of Insight. They discover their Life’s Purpose. Why are they alive and what to live for! Him: This sounds too philosophical. Have you become some kind of Baba / Guru / Godman? Me: When people find their answers on not only their life’s most intricate questions but also to the most routine ones, then they end up thinking of us like that. But we know Who we are.
