Stephanie Ritenbaugh's latest article highlights the cautious optimism among major U.S. metal and steel companies for a recovery in 2025, following a challenging 2024 impacted by high interest rates and sluggish demand. Key players like Radius Recycling, Nucor, and Steel Dynamics anticipate that expected interest rate reductions, infrastructure spending, and an uptick in domestic manufacturing will drive demand for recycled metals and steel next year. However, some sectors, such as aluminum, face ongoing economic uncertainties, leading to a mixed outlook across the industry. https://lnkd.in/g_8JWk98 #recycledmetal #scrap #ferrous #nonferrous

The problem with the PART Act in its original language is that it does not allow for the sale of detached catalytic converters (or de-canned substrate) without unique identifiers. This would, in essence, stop the entire movement of spent automotive catalyst into the recycling supply chain for the recovery of its precious and critical minerals. We have worked with many of the key Senators and Congressional Committees over the past two years to successfully amend the language to eliminate this provision; however, Senator Amy Klobuchar's move to have the Senate Amendment 2422 adopted in its original language as part of the NDAA (which failed) or any other Act would be disastrous for the precious metals industry, as well as the automotive, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and other essential industrial industries that rely on these metals. To landfill our nation's supply of platinum, palladium, and rhodium from secondary sources like scrap catalytic converters (which is one-third of the world's supply, second only to mining) would be unconscionable.
On September 5, 2024, the International Precious Metals Institute (IPMI) and the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA), leading trade organizations in the precious metals recycling sector, formally expressed their opposition to Senate Amendment 2422, part of the proposed National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2025. Did you know that steel, made by mixing iron and carbon together, is the most widely used metal in the UK? It's very commonly used to create cans – usually referred to as tin cans because they are made from tin-coated steel – easily recycled in your kerbside collection or at a recycling centre. Between August 2023 and July 2024, Plan B’s Material Sales team managed 3,673 tonnes of steel cans. The vast majority of this material was supplied to steel mills in the UK. And there's more good news. Every tonne of recycled steel saves: ♻️ 1.5 tonnes of iron ore ♻️ 0.5 tonnes of coal ♻️ 70% of the energy ♻️ 40% of the water ♻️ 75% of CO2 emissions ♻️ 0.97 tonnes of CO2 Source: The British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) Thank you for recycling your steel cans – it really does make a difference. 😁

Recycling Today: #Nucor earnings drop in Q2 Recycled-content #steelmaker sees its earnings per share drop by more than 50 percent compared with one year ago. Charlotte, North Carolina-based electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Nucor Corp. has reported second-quarter 2024 results that show a 53.8 percent drop in earnings per share compared with the second quarter of last year. The company, which also operates the David J. Joseph (DJJ) network of metals recycling facilities, reports net earnings of $645.2 million from April through June, representing a 23.6 percent drop from the $844.8 million earned in the prior quarter and a 55.8 percent decline compared with the $1.46 billion earned in the second quarter of 2023. “While market conditions have softened compared to recent record-setting years, Nucor remains focused on its long-term growth strategy and has returned more than $1.7 billion to investors through June,” Nucor President and CEO Leon Topalian says. Throughout this decade, Nucor has been acquiring downstream steel products and fabricating companies. Although its earnings are down, Topalian says that strategy is succeeding. Is the cement industry entering a new golden age that could transform the sector while decarbonizing it? As the most emissive component of cement, lowering the cost and carbon of high-emitting clinker remains a key priority for achieving net-zero targets. Our latest analysis shows that growth in the adoption of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and fillers in cement mixes could dramatically lower emissions profiles by 70 to 80% and increase global SCM revenues to $40 billion to $60 billion by 2035 from $15 billion to $30 billion today. Learn more about shifting cementitious markets and what it means as industry strives to meet growing global demand for building materials. #buildingmaterials #cement #sustainability #decarbonization #constuction
