This vital update translates and enhances the standards outlined in the ASME B31.12 Hydrogen Pipelines Standard, creating a new exception chapter within the widely used ASME B31.8 Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems Standard. 🚀📜 This comprehensive report is designed to support safe and efficient hydrogen pipeline operations, aiding industry partners in their transition towards a clean energy future. At the end of February, the SPE Separations Technology Technical Section (STTS) organized the first ever Separations Technology Workshop, focused on “Challenges for the Low-Carbon Future”. Delegates from as far afield as Argentina and Saudi Arabia joined their US counterparts, representing a wide cross-section of operating companies, equipment manufacturers, engineering firms, consultancies, academia, and government. The opening keynote was delivered by veteran industry leader, Kenneth E. (Ken) Arnold who shared experiences and examples drawn from 40+ years deploying new technology in oil and gas facilities. Workshop participants discussed traditional separation challenges and how environmental goals can be pursued with design improvements, new methodologies, and new technology. Several presentations addressed methane detection, emissions mitigation, and carbon capture—squarely focused on reducing the carbon footprint of oil and gas production facilities. A lively debate ensued over differences between highly engineered facilities for offshore and international markets and standardized, supply chain driven approaches in the fast-paced onshore and unconventional domains—including how STTS can best serve SPE members in both areas. Wolf Process CEO, Mark Wolf, discussed our innovative approach to online solids removal and how using HDPE instead of stainless steel greatly improves costs and delivery times for onshore operators. Workshop participants left with new insights gained from sharing experiences with their peers—ideas that will benefit their companies and their careers long into the future.
