I need feedback from the LinkedIn community. 🧠 I get asked a lot about my views on making the transition from academia to industry in #STEM fields. I've noticed that there's a lot of industry networking organizations, and a lot of academic-focused organizations, but not a lot of resources at that intersection. Graduate students are heavily dependent on the resources available at their school, which can vary greatly. I'm happy to mentor where I can, but at the end of the day I'm just one person with one point of view. And I know I struggled finding the right people to talk to as a grad student myself, because I didn't know industry terminology yet, and not everybody keeps their LinkedIn profile up-to-date or public. I've been toying around with the idea of making a free database of industry professionals who would be open to being contacted for 1 on 1 informational interviews. I'm envisioning a searchable list of people based on their current company, job title, field of work, educational background, and other keywords. My thought process is that a grad student preparing for their next steps could easily research and speak to someone in their dream role (whether that be as an industry scientist, biostatistician, sales manager, marketer, software engineer, etc.). For mentors, the ask would just be to fill out a brief survey, and then be open to being contacted by people looking to learn. If you've made it this far into reading - here's my ask. 🤔 If you're already in an industry role, would you be open to this kind of thing? Would this have been helpful to you as a student? For current students - is there an open need for this, or am I just engineering a solution to a problem that doesn't exist? Does this kind of list already exist and I'm just not finding it? I'm open to hearing any and all thoughts/questions/concerns. #phdlife #industrytransition #stemcareers

Y’all are AMAZING! This has been by far my most interacted-with and far-reaching post ever. Clearly there’s a need, and I’m so excited to get this organized! Gonna take some time to do some behind the scenes work, but I’ll promise to update everybody soon!

Count me in and I am also happy to help support your endeavor in any other way as you get this up and running. I connect people in academia to folks in industry all the time- a database like this would be helpful and help address the lack of (in my opinion) accessible helpful information for those curious about making this transition.

Love love love this idea! Sign me up. People often worry about reaching out to strangers & that they’ll be ignored. A database of people who have put their hand up to say they’d be happy to help would definitely be useful I think!

It would be a great pleasure to help those transitioning out of University. I know how difficult it was for me just a couple of years ago. IT would be great to give back!
