Researching different options is crucial for creating beautiful and functional spaces. - Have an eagle eye for details. Interior Designers Take Note: Just to be clear, I am NOT an interior designer! I am a product designer. Don't get my intent wrong, I am not throwing shade at interior designers, rather just the opposite. I am constantly AMAZED at their ability to create inspired interiors that leave you breathless. I have had the great opportunity to assist some of them in their work, especially regarding developing individual products. I can take their sketches and inspirational ideas and help turn them into product development documents that craftspeople and factories can turn into real products. I love the collaborative process. When first conceptualising a new product, our design team still put pencils to paper. Take Baton, for example; the initial challenge faced was to design an eye-catching light that could provide a highly focused beam for reading while offering a wash of ambient light. Riley Sanders, Head of Design at Astro, explained, “We aimed to create a practical statement piece for interior designers - characterised by the intersection of two simple geometric lines. We went through several iterations to perfect the right amount of ambient light but stuck to a minimalist design that consisted of three basic elements that would not only serve a functional purpose but also accentuate the overall design of a space. To maintain the core aspect of the product and transfer the purity of our initial concept from page to 3D, every aspect of this product is entirely bespoke. Unlike typical designs that utilise existing joints, we custom-engineered every component in-house to ensure seamless integration and functionality”.
