1 Big Mistake I Made When I Was First Getting Started In Software Engineering Like most beginners, I made many mistakes in my career. But this was the biggest one by far: Create Horizontal Teams. Here's what happened: I was hired as a "Backend Engineer" when I joined a startup a few years ago. I developed the Backend part of some features while someone else with the title of "Frontend Engineer" worked on the Frontend of the same feature. We had a "Backend Team" and a "Frontend Team". I was thrilled back then because I didn't like working with React (our frontend framework), but I enjoyed working with Node. But there was a big issue: almost any feature requires backend and frontend work. What does it mean? Continuous alignment between Frontend and Backend teams. Teams were depending on each other. A single team couldn't provide value to the user on its own. But it's also worth acknowledging that this mistake taught me a ton. Teams should be able to provide value to the users. To do that, they need to be organized in a way that makes it possible to deliver a feature entirely. Organize your teams to make them responsible for a vertical slice of the product.
