Following several decades of stagnation in the geothermal energy sector, governments are once again looking to the abundant renewable energy source to provide heating and power in place of natural gas. Greater investment in the sector could support the development of large networks of geothermal power, offering millions of households clean heating. Some countries, such as Iceland, are already well acquainted with geothermal power, with countries such as the U.K. and U.S. expected to soon follow.

The #geothermal energy market, though rich with potential, remains “stuck” compared to other renewable sources like wind and solar. This is especially true in Northern Ireland, where geothermal development has seen limited commercial success despite government and academic interest. The latest report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), titled "Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Next Generation Geothermal Power," focuses on the potential of next-generation geothermal power to revolutionize the U.S. energy landscape. According to the report, advanced geothermal technology could escalate the United States’ geothermal energy production to 90 gigawatts or more by 2050, marking a twentyfold increase. Additionally, it highlights that with the implementation of next-generation technologies, geothermal power has the capacity to expand by over 20 times from the current U.S. installed capacity. This expansion could contribute 90 GW of clean, firm power nationwide by 2050, with the potential for even greater impact. This report reinforces our commitment to leading the charge towards a cleaner, greener future. In addition to the new nuclear solutions, geothermal energy is yet another source of energy with attractive attributes that holds significant promise in helping us reduce our reliance on fossil fuel. No source is without issues, but the challenges becoming more apparent with wind and solar require us to continually evaluate all our options.

YES! The EU Council is now actively promoting geothermal energy. This week, the EU highlighted geothermal energy as a key component in the transition to sustainable energy sources.
