Currently around the world, First Nations communities are experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change harder than any other group. Islands that hold song and story through time are sinking, grand plains of grass and migration are disappearing, and the disparity of self-determination in facing climate change in our communities are amplifying the many preventable issues to the loss of life and knowledge. To speak of climate change is to speak to the challenges our people face today. Northeastern University in Boston is an institution in a hurry. Decades ago, it was dismissed as a commuter school. However, over the past couple of decades its reputation has risen, and it is now ranked as a top-tier research school by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. According to U.S. News & World Report, it admits a paltry 7 percent of the people who apply. Under the aggressive leadership of President Joseph E. Aoun, a Lebanese-born scholar in linguistics, the school is using architecture to advance its standing, especially in engineering, relative to local competition like Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston University. Nowhere is this more evident than in a new 600,000-square-foot, two-building engineering and science complex designed by PAYETTE. “With these two buildings Northeastern wants to announce its presence as a major research university,” says Kevin Sullivan, who oversaw the design of the buildings and also serves as Payette’s president and CEO. The district’s first phase was the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC), which opened to great acclaim in 2017, winning the Boston Society for Architecture’s coveted Harleston Parker Medal. What advice can you give for future aac participants? The experience of the workshop is not just about learning new knowledge and design methods but also a process of self-discovery. One of the most important aspects is constantly adjusting your expectations, not limiting yourself to your original thoughts, being willing to break free from the inertia of your thinking, and getting used to accepting or compromising with others' opinions. This will help you integrate into a team more quickly, find your role, and make positive contributions to the entire design process.     3. What in your opinion is the biggest benefit of being an architect?     Becoming an architect has made me realize that the world is complex, and it has instilled in me a constant curiosity and a desire for exploration in this intricate world. Architects possess the power to reshape the material environment with inspiration. Changes in the material environment can also bring about changes in a person's habits and even their character.
