HIGHER EDUCATION is in the forefront of my mind today. Last week, I created a post about Higher Ed, mainly noting that I am teaching a class, but also that Lerch Bates Inc. delivers consulting services in that space. I started thinking, and curiosity got the best of me...I wanted to see what types of Higher Ed projects we've been involved with as a team throughout the nation. Not only did I find all types of scopes within all of our disciplines, I also found history, architecture, honor & people's choice awards, merit awards, BECx, innovation, and diversity. Do you recognize any of these buildings or campuses (some of my new favs)? #buildingenclosureconsulting #becx #verticaltransportation #facadeaccess #pedestriancirculation #logistics #buildingenvelopeconsulting #repairandmodernization #forensics

Blaklash are looking forward to delivering an event that speaks to the inequity of climate impacts, the responsibility of the built environment in addressing these issues, and the demand for social justice in the face of climate change. Currently around the world, First Nations communities are experiencing the devastating impacts of climate change harder than any other group. Islands that hold song and story through time are sinking, grand plains of grass and migration are disappearing, and the disparity of self-determination in facing climate change in our communities are amplifying the many preventable issues to the loss of life and knowledge. To speak of climate change is to speak to the challenges our people face today. We endeavour for this conference to be a catalyst to demand ownership of the responsibility we all hold. may words drive action, not just aspiration. #climatechange #alwayswasalwayswillbe #architecture #landscapearchitecture #socialjustice
UniSA Creative | Program Director of Architecture | Treasurer of the Association of Architectural Schools of Australasia (AASA)
Magandjin-Brisbane to host the 2026 ACSA & AASA International Conference! The Association of Architecture Schools of Australasia (AASA) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) are delighted to announce that a consortium from Magandjin-Brisbane, led by the The University of Queensland has been awarded the 2026 ACSA & AASA International #conference. The announcement was made during the AASA Special Event at BVN Architecture Brisbane Studio on 24 Oct 2024. The winning proposal, entitled “Catalyst” will ignite conversations about #climatechange across traditionally disconnected disciplinary, cultural, and generational domains. The purpose is to break out of ‘architecture-only’ thinking, connect with allied professions, and position the crucial importance of #education as lifelong, iterative learning. The conference will attract academics, practitioners, and students across Built Environment disciplines to catalyse a coherent narrative across five conference tracks: (1) #Climate and #Education led by AASA (2) Climate and #Culture led by UQ (3) Climate and #Technology co-led by QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and Building 4.0 CRC (4) Climate and #Place co-led by Suburban Futures and Brisbane Open House. (5) A fifth #FirstNations-led track will weave its way through all conference tracks with a focus on Climate and #Justice led by Blaklash. “The panel were extremely impressed with the depth and rigour of the submission and the breadth of stakeholders and supporters the school has drawn into the proposal” said the AASA President, Associate Professor John Doyle, “the conference is a platform for #architectural and #urbandesign-based propositions – completed exemplars and critical scenarios for #possiblefutures”. The AASA and ACSA are extremely excited by the proposal and look forward to working with all partners to the bid to bring this generational event to life. https://lnkd.in/g2mEj9CD https://www.aasa-arch.org/ John Doyle Deborah Barnstone Cecilia Bischeri Peter McPherson Martha Liew, PhD Association of Consulting Architects Architects Accreditation Council of Australia Australian Institute of Architects #Architecture #ArchitectureIndustry #ArchitecturalProfession #HigherEducation #ArchitecturalEducation #ArchitecturalPartnership #ArchitecturalAdvocacy #ArchitectureMatters

“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” - Winston Churchill, 1943 The link between intentional design and society is linear – because while architecture shapes our students, it’s the students that shape our future. And campuses worldwide are sparing no detail, specifying materials for both functionality and aesthetics. These elements breathe life into universities, building community and encouraging academic success. Don’t neglect the details. Northeastern University in Boston is an institution in a hurry. Decades ago, it was dismissed as a commuter school. However, over the past couple of decades its reputation has risen, and it is now ranked as a top-tier research school by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. According to U.S. News & World Report, it admits a paltry 7 percent of the people who apply. Under the aggressive leadership of President Joseph E. Aoun, a Lebanese-born scholar in linguistics, the school is using architecture to advance its standing, especially in engineering, relative to local competition like Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston University. Nowhere is this more evident than in a new 600,000-square-foot, two-building engineering and science complex designed by PAYETTE. “With these two buildings Northeastern wants to announce its presence as a major research university,” says Kevin Sullivan, who oversaw the design of the buildings and also serves as Payette’s president and CEO. The district’s first phase was the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC), which opened to great acclaim in 2017, winning the Boston Society for Architecture’s coveted Harleston Parker Medal. EXP, a 350,000-square-foot building that completes the ensemble, opened in fall 2023. https://lnkd.in/enCw2hJf

Alumni Talks with Yiran Liu (Part 2) Yiran Liu on his experience at the aac autumn workshop 2023, where he revitalized a former department store and turned its rooftop into a city-defining landmark for Hamburg, together with his group. We wish him the utmost success in his upcoming undertakings! Remember this workshop at https://bit.ly/3fK4kAN Apply for our next workshops at https://bit.ly/42KPos4 2. What advice can you give for future aac participants? The experience of the workshop is not just about learning new knowledge and design methods but also a process of self-discovery. One of the most important aspects is constantly adjusting your expectations, not limiting yourself to your original thoughts, being willing to break free from the inertia of your thinking, and getting used to accepting or compromising with others' opinions. This will help you integrate into a team more quickly, find your role, and make positive contributions to the entire design process. 3. What in your opinion is the biggest benefit of being an architect? Becoming an architect has made me realize that the world is complex, and it has instilled in me a constant curiosity and a desire for exploration in this intricate world. Architects possess the power to reshape the material environment with inspiration. Changes in the material environment can also bring about changes in a person's habits and even their character. Humbly harnessing this power, and using one's unique inspiration and exploration to add a little diversity to the world, and taking one small step towards an ideal vision of reality, is a career worth dedicating a lifetime to. #aacHamburg #AcademyForArchitecturalCulture #CampusRainvilleterrasse #aacAutumnWorkshop2023 #AlumniTalk #HighStreetAlive #RetailReuse Image: Jochen Stüber
