R&D Team: Growing Together by Uniting Yaps’ Agricultural Community Through the Establishment of New Yap Farmers Associations // Monday, March 11, 2024//DYCA PIO Colonia Yap - The Department of Resources and Development, in collaboration with the Green Climate Fund(GCF) Food Security Livelihood(FSL) Project, held a workshop on the establishment of the Farmers Association of Yap on Friday, March 8th, 2024, at the Small Business Development Center(SBDC) Conference building from 10 AM to 1 PM. The meeting, open to all interested farming groups, women's and men’s groups, youth groups, and community groups engaged in gardening and farming activities, highlighted the importance of fostering collaboration and enhancing agricultural practices in the State of Yap. Key topics discussed during the meeting included the review and approval of drafted by-laws, confirmation of association members, and the election of officers. Whereas, the by-laws had been unanimously approved by the farmers’ group, leading to the establishment of the State-level Farmers’ Association, named the Farmers Association of Yap. Elected officers include Mr. James Choay as President, Ms. Mercedes Tiningmow as Vice President, Ms. Genista Kadannged as Treasurer, and Ms. Emily Mugyan as Secretary. The next step for the newly elected officers is scheduled to meet next week to finalize the Article of Incorporation and other necessary documents for the NGO registration into the state registry. This underscores the commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, addressing climate change impacts, and fostering community resilience in Yap. I had a great experience last week, we held two Green Field Days (GFD) in Dutse and Sabo area of Kaduna State, where we showcased our hybrid seed varieties as part of our continuous process of experiential marketing. The feedback from the farmers, farmer head and field supervisors were nothing short of incredible. I have observed that women are showing a remarkable passion for agriculture and doing excellent. The agricultural space, once dominated by men, is now benefiting from the contributions of women impacts. In fact, some of the most successful farms I have visited were managed by women, which I found astonishing.   Many shared that their yields have cascaded from 3mt/ha to 8mt/ha using Seed Co Nigeria seed varieties despite the prolonged dry spell experienced this farming season, this is a show that you reap what you sow. This transformation in productivity is not just about increased yields, it's also about empowering farmers, improving their incomes, and enhancing livelihoods across regions. We couldn't have achieved this great feat without the unwavering support of our partners in the agriculture sector and the host communities who have given us an enabling environment. Their commitment and collaboration are key to turning our vision of improving farmers' lives into reality, thereby making our impact a lasting one! IDH uses a data-centric and business analytical approach as a key intervention to drive global food systems transformation. This approach helps us present a compelling business case to private sector companies, encouraging them to engage with smallholder market systems and improve their smallholder service delivery. These enhancements subsequently contribute to improving the livelihoods of smallholders. From 2019 to 2023, IDH collaborated with Syngenta Kenya Ltd on their Mavuno Zaidi project, aimed at supporting Syngenta expand its operations to reach 52,000 smallholder in Kenya. Our endline report sheds light on the effectiveness of Mavuno Zaidi's business model, which integrates a service coalition to provide holistic services to farmers. This coalition supports smallholder farmers in the potato and tomato value chains, helping them access finance, agricultural inputs, markets and training. Personally I think alot of policies have been laid down, towards the advancement of agriculture over the years. Often I find rural farmers still struggling to meet their daily needs regardless of trucks full of food heading to cities. Why do some policies set not see the light of day? Why can't governments especially locally(Kenya), not have long term solutions to make food readily available and affordable for it's citizens. How really does government cushion the producer(farmer) and consumer (me and you) through policies? So what do you think? #failuresandlearnings (2): Context: Within our #organic #vanilla supply chain in Uganda, we are exclusively working with small holder farmers for all our supply. The farmers are grouped into groups, which are either registered cooperatives or voluntary associations. Our average yield per farmer ( as per our last crop estimation event) is about 99kg per farmer, where-as the Uganda average is about 50kg/ farmer according to information supplied by the CRS/Vanex. To be certified each a farmer must be registered and all farm details and farm history must be recorded and farmers are generally then placed in a 36 month conversion period from conventional to organic certified. During this time ( 6 harvests!), they have to follow organic practises, but can not have any direct financial benefits from the organic system and prices. Problem: Each farmer, big or small costs the same to register and audit, this means that the bigger farmers have a low cost per kg on audit fees, but the small farmers, some only deliver 5 kg, is does not make financial sense. We thus have a internal conflict in our groups. We as company would prefer to only have bigger farmers that will bring down our unit/kg cost of certification, where-as the groups, want to add all volume they can get from their farmers into the supply. The Field Officers of these groups, who is also working with us in these audit functions, prefers to have more farmers irrespective of size, because it means more work for them and more employment/money.
