🎵 🎶 🔥 Exclusive: Manor Lords' Lead Composer on Writing Music For Video Games When it comes to game development, one aspect that often gets unfairly overlooked is the soundtrack, which, much like proper lighting does to a 3D model, can elevate a game to new heights and enhance the gaming experience tenfold. I mean, can you imagine wandering the mysterious and awe-inspiring lands of Skyrim without Jeremy Soule's Elysian tunes? Or slicing cyber-ninjas into myriads of pieces without Jamie Christopherson's legendary high-octane bangers that are arguably even more popular than the game they were made for? Me neither. One of the more recent games with an exceptional soundtrack is undoubtedly Manor Lords, a medieval city-builder and real-time tactics video game developed by the Slavic Magic team. To learn more about Manor Lords' music, I recently spoke to Pressure Cooker Studios' Ben Schutte, the game's Lead Composer, who discussed at length how Manor Lords' soundtrack was made, talked about getting started as a Composer for video games, explained whether it is easier to work with filmmakers or game developers, and more. 🎮 Violent Violin: Experimental Audio Game 🎻 Excited to share "Violent Violin," an experimental audio game I created in Unity using Chuck. In this project, I took beautiful violin pieces and transformed them into intense, distorted sounds, all within a first-person shooter framework. 🎶 The game explores how music drives gameplay, letting players interact with sound in unexpected ways. Working on this during my master's was a unique way to process emotions—turning heartbreak into breaking audio! 💔🎧 Skills acquired: #AudioProgramming #GameDesign #InteractiveSoundDesign #Foley #AudioManipulation #ExperimentalSound #AudioGame #InteractiveSound #GameDesign #MusicInGames #Unity3D #Wwise #Chuck #GameAudio #ProblemSolving #FirstPersonShootGame Stay tuned for more exciting projects! 🎶✨ Check the full video here 🎧🔥: https://lnkd.in/dFKvjugW

Recently showcased my game development skills for a horror game, owning the level design and sound design aspects. Utilized modular synthesizers to craft all music, innovatively inserting samples in the modular case and modulating them via reverb and pitch shifting. The realm of game development offers limitless possibilities! #GameDevelopment #SoundDesign #ModularSynthesis

🎶 Sound shapes the way we feel 🎶 Donkey Kong Country turned 30 a couple weeks back, and while the nostalgia is real, the game’s sound design still remains unmatched. David Wise didn’t just write music for a game—he crafted an atmosphere. From jazzy rhythms to ambient synths, the soundtrack didn’t just complement gameplay; it transformed it, making every jump, swim, and boss battle feel like an adventure. https://lnkd.in/eYJWUwcH We actually featured this legendary soundtrack earlier this year in our JMA Radio episode The Sport of Luxury with Kevin Keane 🧠 of Brainsights. https://lnkd.in/e9TW2SsU The funny thing about sound design is that the greatest examples are often invisible – it’s not something you actively notice, but it makes everything else come alive. A perfect track can transport you to another world, ground you in a moment, or even unlock a memory you didn’t realize you had. It’s not just about the notes; it’s about the vibe, the emotions, and the way sound weaves itself into our experiences. Whether it’s the hum of city streets, a perfectly timed movie score, or the ambient loops of your favorite game, sound has this uncanny ability to create meaning. What’s a sound or piece of music that instantly transports you? #SoundDesign #Nostalgia #Atmosphere #CreativityInSound #Soundtrack

Final Major Project for MA course in Composing for Video Games, week 7 and 8 done! Only 3 weeks left! Submitted and got feedback for Review II. Now I'm going to implement it in my music. Whilst waiting on feedback I went through my research and distilled it into relevant reference tracks, music analysis etc. This will also help me in my final stretch. One thing I love about composing for games is the collaborative and iterative nature of it. I compose, get feedback and continue from there. I have someone else tell me if I'm doing it right, going adrift or whether a piece of music is done. It can take me out of my comfort zone, show me another perspective, try another approach, destroy and rebuild. That can be daunting but also very inspiring - I like the dynamic movement of it. I realized I haven't shared any music yet. So here's a work in progress... #gamemusic #videogamemusic #indiegamedev #indiedev #indiegamedeveloper #cyberpunk #retrogaming #scifi #retrogames #retro #scifigame #gamecomposer

Having made a little more progress, I have started adding the details for the sub-menus from the main menu. As well as adding some menu audio effects for button selection and some menu music. I have slowed down a bit in the progress as I have also started another round of research into comparative titles, aiming to go into more depth, comparing features, systems, and design with what I am aiming to achieve for my project. Having chosen 8 titles to use for the current round of research, I am hoping to create a clearer and more defined strategy for my project, as well as gain a deeper understanding of 2D Metroidvania games as well as games that integrate multiple endings into their storyline. If you have any further suggestions please feel free to add them.
